I had asked for input on the general page but got very limited response. I am considering purchasing a Garmin III Plus. Does anyone else have experience with this unit or others?

Steve: The only GPS I have used is the Etrex and have been very happy with it however the display screen is quite small, I have two Pinpoint 7520's and am looking forward to the GPS upgrade when it becomes available my understanding is it should be by this spring

Steve,

I've got a Lowrance GlobalMap 100. I like it alot. Very easy to use, and not too expensive. I got the Mapping CD, and also bought some of the HotSpots/Navionics lake maps for it. They are rally nice to have, Used it on LOTW with the Navionics map last fall. Wouldn't go without it now. If you want to see it, I'll be at the Chapter fisheree on the 26th, or you can e-mail me and get together for a cold one. Let me know.

By far the easiest GPS I have ever run is the Raytheon 420 chartplotter. You can get the Navionics cards for it which are really nice. I don't know about the Lowrance, but you can zoom into 1/8 - 1/4 mi. without losing map resolution depending on the area. Port areas are 1/8 mi. most everywhere else is 1/4mi.

I use a Magellan 315, and like the other respondees, I find the screen too small. However, I just got a laptop, so now I can use my GPS with my laptop and some moving map software called Fugawi.

Basically, I put a chart of the lake in the laptop, run the program and the GPS will show me (on the laptop screen) exactly where I am on the lake (depths included).

I can't wait til open water comes!

Cheers,

J.P.

If you like the mapping features take a look at the Garmin 168. BPS was selling them for $599.00 which came with a $50 rebate (read $549.00) and a $99 Fishing Hot Spots CD which had a key to unlock one region of maps.
