A friend's 14-year-old son is just getting started in musky fishing and asked me what "cheap" lures I would recommend. His dad is a fisherman but not for musky. The kid is on a pretty tight budget. I am going to give him some suggestions along with gifting him a few lures. Maybe some of you have a few smaller to medium size favorites that would be good for a kid just getting started that I am not aware of, lures under $25. Thanks in advance for any help.

Slammers, Storms, Suicks, Shallow Invaders. Inexpensive and all catch fish.

I'll help. What rod/reel does he have?

Currently he has a medium heavy 7' rod with an older C3. He is getting something newer very soon for his birthday. I suggested getting a $100-150 rod like a Daiwa, Shimano or Okuma in MH or hvy., 8-8'6" I recommended spending at least $150 on a reel with a medium or "all purpose" gear ratio. I told his dad to take him to the musky shop in Minocqua and the guys there will show him what's available and what they recommend.

Another good source is Marketplace. Maybe because I live in northern WI where musky fishermen are more common, I see a lot of musky equipment for sale on Marketplace, well below new prices.

Any small bucktail. Put it on and cast his arm off and he will catch fish. Mepps, Bucher, showgirl, etc.

Marketplace and craigslist are great places to find some used stuff, now why didn't I think of that? I look at CL regularly.

Bass Pro Shops has an XPS line of muskie baits you might want to consider. Basically knock offs of some of the popular muskie lures out there, with a budget price. Kdawg

My sister's grandson is just getting into musky fishing. I am giving him a spare net, a hook cutter and needle nose pliers. Last year he rowed out on a bay of the Chippewa Flowage and caught a 40" fish. But, if not for a nearby boat he would have been up a creek. They netted and unhooked the fish. Now he has the bug and I want him to be safe.
