Posts: 188 Location: Rochester, New York | I was wondering what lb test mono backing you guys would suggest for 100lb power pro maxcuatro and i would probably fill the reel around 1/2- 5/8 full with the backing because of how thin and expensive the maxcuatro is but worry if i get a fish and a lot of line is out or something ridiculous happens want to know that mono backing would still be able to hold up to the fish ?

Posts: 591 | I would use the mono diameter equivalent. Maybe 20 lb mono or a little less.

Posts: 2041 | Doesn’t matter, anything from 6lb to 20lb works, I use the cheapest bulk 10lb mono Walmart had 20 years ago I still have the same 1000 yard spool, you should never get to your backing, you want mono to pack tight on the reels and imo 20lb starts to get too big to pack nice, also I’d put at least 150 yards of braid on, you flip the line after 1-3 years depending how much you fish, good chance you’re good for 5-6 years on the same 150 yards - so the investment is minimal, after 6 years your 150 yards will be about 80 if you retie and continue to check you line for abrasion above your leader….sometimes you need to cut 3-4ft off and retie

Posts: 402 Location: WI | I've always matched the diameter of my braid & backing. 250yds of Zebco 20lb mono is about $2.50 at wally world.
