Just bought this boat and got it out today. Opened it up and was cruising at about 4000rpm suddenly the RPMs drop to 3500 for a few seconds and then back to 4000rpms. Is this normal? Never had this issue with the Honda

Nope, shouldn't be happening. Do you have a Smartcraft gauge(s), and if so was there any sort of alarm? What RPM do you see at wide-open throttle? And does it run OK at WOT?

I had one of those engines for a few years on a Lund Tyee 1850. Great engine, but I had a few issues with the boat the first few months--and had some symptoms similar to yours.

EDIT: More questions...

1) Did you put the fuel in it? (Could there be water in the fuel?)
2) Is there a fuel/water separator?

I put 10gallons of gas in it about 6 weeks ago and another 10 of non oxegnated gas in yesterday to top off the tank for a week of boating & fishing. Don't know about the separator. Didn't have it wide open yet

Did you use fuel with ethanol in it, by chance? Also, do you have Smartcraft gauges--and if so, did you get any sort of alarm?

The lift pump on the V-rod is pretty sensitive, and I remember it causing me a few issues when I first got my boat new in 2007. There was a fuel-related problem (with the tank, as it turned out), and the lift pump actually broke a time or two. I think I needed two replacements as I recall. But this was a 2007 V-rod, and that was the first or second year of the 4-cyl V-rods.

Anyway, I would run the thing as long as it continues to run OK. You might consider putting some fresh premium (no ethanol) in the tank, to fill it and mix with the fuel you have there already. You might also consider adding a fuel additive like Sea Foam. Also, if you haven't seen the site already, check out the forum over at the Verado Owners Club. They have a LOT of good information there, and there are people who've been running V-rod engines for thousands of hours by now. It's an invaluable resource.

No sweat. When you do open that thing up, it should turn at least 6000 RPM or so. There is a break-in schedule on the Verado Owner's Club site. If it's a new engine, you should be running it WOT for like 1 minute in every 10-15. I forget exactly, but it's a pretty specific and detailed break-in schedule...but easy enough to do.

They are also known for coil issues. If it has never been into a dealer you might want to bring it in and make sure that there are no Service Bulletins out on the motor that need to be done.
