i would like to get a new combo for large rubbers and other large lures. i think i have a rod that im going to get but the reel is way harder. what do you guys use for the big stuff? at the moment my price range is around $200 at the most. thanks for your help! feel free to pm me too if you would like. im fairly new to the sport and always need more knowledge! i should add that i am right handed but reel left hand so i can hold the rod better.

My personal opinion would be an Abu NACL or the new S. you can find many of those gently used or even new on eBay in that price range. Another option would be the Daiwa Lexa 400. I have both, but like my Abus a little better.

Kam,
At $200 you're pretty much not only out of the price range of *new* reels that I'd recommend for throwing big rubber, but you're really out of the price range of all musky reels that I'd recommend for anyone in general. $200 can still buy you the Abu Garcia C3 and C4, Abu Garcia 7000C series, and the cheaper Shimano Cardiff and Corvalis reels, which are the reels that a lot of us started on when we just got into musky fishing and were throwing smaller tackle that seemed huge to us, but they weren't designed to handle the big stuff, nor do you find the preferable ratios/drag size to obtain the inches per crank that a lot of the musky guys are finding optimal for throwing big rubber.

I use the Tranx HG, its a high speed reel with a large spool that allows me 43 inches per crank to really bring in the slack line fast. It cast well, and has the heavy duty components to take the season long punishment I put it through.

My honest recommendation would be to save a bit more money and get the Diawa Lexa HD in 7.1:1 (or 8.1:1 if you're only ripping slack line). It will perform and hold up pretty good for you and is one of the best value reels on the market price wise for what you're looking to do.

Rock on,

C7

what would be wrong with him Just getting the standard LEXA 400 HS or PWR and if anything at all upgrade through pikemaster...can get either under $200 new along with the REVO Toro S I think would be fine...He can upgrade bearing for like $12 from PIKE. Do you not think these would hold up for him?
