I currently have an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500C3. I realize this is a fairly light reel, but I was wondering what I could throw with it. Could I use it for Cowgirls or should I stick with Showgirls/Baby Girls? What about Bulldawgs? I only fish a couple weekends a year, so I'd rather not buy another reel for now. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am still fairly new to musky fishing.

You might get a weekend or two out of it with cowgirls. Not a bad reel, jsut not a good big bait reel.

bdog is correct. That reel was not engineered to handle bulldawgs or dbl. 10s. What you will accomplish is undue stress on the gears and other working parts. It's a great reel, but not meant to handle large baits.

Makes sense. Thank you gentleman. Now, I'm assuming it could handle something like a Suick, or is that still a little too big for the reel?

I would throw a suick on it should work well just set the drag so the bait slowly falls

I used 5500 C3s, with crappy thick/heavy line, crappy rods, didn't properly maintain them, and threw anything and everything, for several years before falling victim to the need for multiple high-tech rod/reels. The C3s still work fine, and are always around for backups / loaners.

In your situation I wouldn't be afraid to use that reel for whatever you want. But, it's probably a little slow for Showgirls. It'll work, but you'll be turning the crank pretty fast. Bulldawgs and most jerkbaits will be fine, as there's no drag on them. I prefer Jr. Double Cowgirls (basically Dbl9s) over any other dbl blades. Just haven't seen the need to go much bigger, and the C3 will handle them just fine.

I agree with Booch. While the 5500 C3 is not an ideal reel for larger baits, it will work. I have one that I started out with and is still in service to this day as a loaner. Has never let me down. It will work well for most things up to 8" jakes, double 8s, mag dawgs, ect... I put a revo power handle on mine which seems to help a bit as well.
