Posts: 239 Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | I spent a total of 5 weeks on LOTW this past summer. Started in June on opener and finished the first week of October. As usual wind made a huge difference on rocks where most of my 27 fish boated over forty inches. My daughter joined me for a week in early Aug. She picked out of hundreds of lures on hand a Mepps Giant Killer dressed with a white bucktail. Her first evening out she caught three muskies,42, 43, 45" That was an eye opener. Then a long time resident on the lake mentioned the huge shiner population that was abnormally shallow due to high water. That explained a lot. My best fish of the year came on the white Mepps, 49 1/2". This was my first year fishing LOTW, so I have a lot to learn, Here is the breakdown: June 7 total, biggest 47" bucktails 4, grandmas, two, creeper 1 July 11 total, biggest 48" Bucktails 6, grandmas 2, topwater 3 Aug. 17 total, biggest 49 Bucktails 12, grandmas3, topwater2 Sept. 12 total, biggest 49 bucktails 4, grandmas 8 Oct. 6 total, biggest 46 Grandmas 6 Mudpuppy

Posts: 1901 Location: MN | Perhaps I'm missing the connection. You give the breakdown of 53 fish and which lure style caught them, but you only mention 4 fish caught on a white bucktail. Is that the extent of your evidence that color made the difference in your fishing this year?

Posts: 239 Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | Sorry for the confusion gentlemen. Total of 17 caught on White Mepps Giant killer, biggest was 49. I did not measure any fish I thought were under 40". The interesting point I was trying to make is that a White Mepps Giant Killer was a lure I had never used. In fact I hadn't thrown Mepps lure in years. In my case the old tried and true lures were very effective last year. I just thought this was very interesting and I wanted to share it with you. Mudpuppy

Posts: 325 Location: Otsego, MN | I might be out of line and putting words in Mudpuppy's mouth but when I read his post I took it as 53 total fish caught in the boat, 27 by him... Either way thanks for sharing your observations and success!

Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Interesting. It seems the past two seasons smaller lures have been particularly effective through much of the season. Something to do with lower water temperatures? Fr. K
