| I have decided to do away with snaps and go directly to the spitring with my leaders. I just started making my own leaders and I am using .029 wire, seems like it killed the action of the crankbaits a little. I use 80 whiplash for line. Do I need to go with thinner wire on my leaders or is it the lack of the snap killing off the action? I could have been dreaming, it was a little cold. What diameter of wire does everyone else use for crankbaits. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I use 60# sevenstrand, which seems to be the ticket. There is no diameter listed on the spool, but my guess is about .020 or alittle less. The split ring shouldn't hurt the action any, I wouldn't think. |

Be careful if you split ring on that thin of a wire leader. I have had trouble with the ring working it self off of the wire! |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I have been using a single strand leader exclusively now for 3 years, and I think it is the only way to go! Not sure what diameter the wire I use is, but I use 124# (#10C) Tooth Proof Amerciacn Fishing Wire that can be found at an area Fleet Farm. This year I am going to be trying a little bit lighter wire at 105# and 86#. This is a very inexpensive way to go, and it eliminates a lot of hardware failure.
A few words of caution though. Like Bill said pay attention to your leader working it's way through the split ring. This is especially true if you are trying to "twitch" or "rip" hard pulling crankbaits! Also, if you leader starts looking a little kinked and rough looking replace it! 30' of wire only cost around $3 so don't chince. I usually replace my leaders every day, or every other day. |

Location: Davenport, IA | I used to use .051 and .045 for crankbaits but decided to try something new this year. I am using 86# wire and it does seem to make a difference. As far as split rings, I did that for awhile but got sick of it. I dont' think my stringease stay loc snaps are going to fail. |

Not sure of the diameter but I use 60# and 90# seven strand with split rings and have yet to have a problem with them. Just keep your split ring pliers in your pocket and your ready to go, if the wire starts to fray or wear, cut it and re tie and crimp. |
