Looking for some advice for my fishing partner. He has a Lund with the above mentioned motor and he's having issues. The motor will start and run ok at idle, however anytime he tries to get up on plane, it will bog down and quit. If he squeezes the bulb, it will continue to run but he can't keep it going at upper speeds without continually squeezing the bulb. Before taking it to the marina, does anyone have any advice on things to check or try? It has to be a fuel related issue of some sort, however he has run a lot of fuel through it this summer. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a small crack on the fuel line beside the bulb. my 2010 engine worked fine but I kept smelling fuel, i think I found it before it got to a bigger problem. Might be the culprit.

Hiya,

A pull of the plugs could tell a bit here. If they are running dark, it is receiving too much fuel. If running white, lean.... This is just a quick start to begin isolating the issue...

I would start with some of the easy, preventative maintenance things as mentioned above: Fuel filter and plugs. If he is running a fuel/water separator, that would be something to swap out as well. If there is no change, see if you can use a separate tank and hose and take the motor out and retest. If no change, then the problem is isolated to the motor. If performance goes back to normal on the separate tank, the problem is fuel line related.

In many cases, what you describe can in many ways be a tell tale sign that carbs are in need of work... Not sure if your's is efi/throttle body or not, but if it is carbs, that would be my next thing to go to after changing out plugs and fuel filter, check for leaks, and no change in performance.

This is just a start, and hopefully with the couple of quick things, performance will come back.

Change the bulb. Its the simplest, the least amount of money, and the most common.

I have the same motor and I had a similar issue. I took it to a dealer, and they could not solve it. I kept on reading and reading and finally I read something about the thermostat getting clogged up. I checked the thermostat, and sure enough, there were a bunch of pebbles in it. I'm guessing this was preventing the thermostat from opening and the motor was getting too rich/not rich enough fuel to run at certain RPM's or water temps. (I mostly only had problems in cooler water i.e. 60 degrees or less.)

Before finding this out, I replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter, and primer bulb and it didn't help anything. Not saying these aren't the issue, but they weren't in my case.
