Was reading an article about Illinois' Musky populations and stocking....

They had mentioned that this spring the Fox Chain will be stocked with a large number of Leech Lake strain fish around a foot long...Obviously this is some good news....

Anyone have any other updates?

'Bout time they start stocking with some fish of their own. Tired of them stealing all the Pewaukee Lake fish that go over the dam! LOL

Yes you are correct. According to the Illinois DNR. Stocking efforts continue with 1,000 Leech Lake-strain advanced fingerlings introduced in 2001 and twice that number slated for introduction next month.
This again high lights the importance of protecting those Leech Lake spawning beds!

I agree in theory that leech lake strain fish would be great. I do have some reservations about stocking them though. These fish have been stocked in il waters before, in low numbers but have been stocked. Anybody ever hear of a nice one caught? I have not. Have caught some small ones in warmer water southern lakes. Seeing how their native range puts them in cooler waters than the barred musky, I wonder how their survival rates are and their ability to live long enough to reach the desirable size would be. I know there is just such a study underway and I hope is roves itself to be a worthy fish in il.

In addition to what the DNR is stocking, the SOB chapter will stock approx 1,200 15-17" over wintered fish this spring from the MMM. The FRV chapter will stock approximately 200 additional fish from the same source. At this moment I am not sure they are Leech Lake strain. MMM has other strains. I will find out and post.
