Posts: 253 | I am trying to transfer data from my 5200C to my 5200IGPS via the card reader. I bought a SDNC 16GB card. When I put it in it tells me there is no MMC card. I did a little research and saw there is a difference but I am not sure if I truly need a MMC card or the SD will work. If I do need an MMC card, where do I get those. I did not look for one of those specifically when I was at the store.(Walmart) Thanks for any help. Steve

Location: Green Bay, WI | Looks maybe like the MMC cards are able to be read by an SD reader, but possibly not the other way around. http://www.diffen.com/difference/MMC_vs_SD_Card You should make sure that your card is formatted correctly first, as specified by Lowrance's specs. But if it is already formatted, then try writing data to it from your PC, and then reading the files back again. In other words, make sure you can access the device before abandoning it for an MMC card. Otherwise, I would think you can get an MMC card from Amazon.com, or possibly even find them at Radio Shack or someplace similar. TB EDIT: I did a little research on this on my end, but could not find an actual "5200 iGPS" unit listed on Lowrance's site. I did find the 5300 iGPS though, and downloaded its manual. On page 22 it states that you can use either an MMC or an SD card...so I would think that your unit might well be able to use either of those two types as well. Do you by chance have a link to your unit on the Lowrance site? Here is the page I used to find the manual for the 5300 iGPS: http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowrance-Documents/GlobalMap5300ciGPS_... EDIT #2: Steve, I don't see any 5200 iGPS listed in their product archive at all. I also suspect that the default file format for the older MMC card might be FAT16, and your new SD card might have a FAT32 format. I'm not certain about that however. I cannot seem to find any information about the format those older Lowrance units expect--so I can't be sure this is an issue. But if you CAN read/write from/to the card, see what format your computer tells you it has. Then if it's not FAT16, use Windows to try to format it to FAT16 (if that's an option for you even), and see if the Lowrance unit sees it then. NOTE: As I recall, Windows calls FAT32 "FAT32" but FAT16 is simply "FAT". So you might not see an actual "FAT16" option listed when you try to reformat the card, there might only be FAT and FAT32, is what I'm saying. EDIT #3: OK, I think I might have found the problem. I think that your SD card is too big. I found reference to a statement on the Lowrance site that the 5300 iGPS (there is no 5200 iGPS on their site) can only use an MMC/SD card up to 2 gigabytes in size. So not only might the file format be an issue, the actual capacity of the card very well might be an issue as well. I'd still try to re-format the card if nothing else works though, and just see how it goes. You might get lucky. If not, you'll need to find a card no greater than 2 GB in size, and try that. It might need to be FAT16 though, so keep that in mind. Edited by tcbetka 5/12/2013 5:09 PM

Posts: 253 | Thanks for all your insight Tom. I do have a 5300 IGPS, I miss typed the model when I wrote the message. I will take your advise and try formatting a smaller card. I truely appreciate your input. Steve

Location: Green Bay, WI | No sweat. Jerry Newman saw this thread as well and told me yesterday that he believes the problem is indeed that your card is too large. He thought that it does need to be less than 2gb in size. So then the question is whether or not you can simply format the card to have one partition that is 2gb in size? I would try though. So take a look at this video and try to format that card in FAT, and make a 2gb partition size. For now, just leave the rest of the card as free space just to see if the 5300's operating system will recognize that partition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RagoBgnlp4s The other thing you could do first (before putting your data on the card) is to create TWO 2gb partitions on the card, just to see if the unit recognizes them. If not, then try the one partition. (EDIT) Then you wouldn't have to install your data on the card, only to lose it if you later tried to reformat the card again. But if that doesn't work, you have your answer--you need a smaller card. In a perfect world, you could create eight 2gb logical partitions and the 5300 would recognize each as a different card. Then you would have "A", "B", ..."H" partitions, and could store different data in each partition--and simply select the one you wanted depending upon where you were fishing, for instance. But I doubt that Lowrance's unit will allow that, so you may just need a smaller card. Good luck! TB Edited by tcbetka 5/13/2013 9:22 AM

Posts: 253 | Thanks for your input Tom. All it took was getting a 2 GB card and then the directions in my book was all I needed. This is what this website is all about, helping others. Take care and have a great season. Steve ![]()

Location: Green Bay, WI | Hey no problem! Good to learn a bit about it, and now the topic will be searchable, so it may help others in the future as well. For giggles though, try reformatting the 16gb card with a single 2gb FAT partition and then try it in the machine. If there is only one partition that is of the proper size, and the rest of the card is "free" space...I wonder if it would work? It would be an interesting experiment anyway, and (potentially) useful information. Anyway, glad I was able to help. TB
