Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I am looking at replacing some of my hooks on a few of my lures. I have seen a multitude of different opinions on what is the best hook and why. I just unfortunately can't remember any of them. What is the best hook option for replacing treble hooks? I know it will depend a little on lure style and weight of the hook, I'm just looking for a general overall opinion. any info will help. thanks

Posts: 833 | When I feel the need to upgrade my hooks (which is most of the time, but bait dependent) I generally use Mustad 3551 trebles. I use size 7/0 through 9/0 depending on the bait. This is mostly because they are easy to buy in bulk at Thorne Brothers. This is handy not only for doing modifications like “T-ing” the treble, but also as the hooks require replacing after they taste the Knippex.

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I just got a 9" Shallowraider and love the hooks on them. Unfortunately, they are not for sale in bulk, but only thru the kits Joe Bucher Outdoors offers. They are VMC 4651 short shank 6/0 hooks. I did some poking around and see some VMC hooks that are similar, although they are not offered in the short shank version. They are the 8527 Gladiator version. They are 6x strong like the 4651, and come in two colors. One place I saw that had them was lurepartsonline.com The largest they offer is 5/0.

| This is just one theory. Adjust the hook size for maximum action on the lure. In other words, don't put huge hooks on if they will negatively affect the lure's action. You have to get the fish to hit the lure before the issue of hook strength arises. An example from my own experience is the 6" Jake. To get the lure to action that was acceptable I had to downsize my hooks to size 1. To cast the 8" Jake effectively, I had to downsize to prevent fouling on the cast. | |||

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | Yeah I know about the hook size and making sure that it wont effect the lure situation. The first time I ever replaced some hooks I went to big and learned my lesson real quick. My biggest issue is getting rusty hooks that on the lures that I use the most. So I am trying to find a way to counter act that as well as what is the strongest/lightest to give me the best hook ups. thanks for all the info so far, I appreciate it

Posts: 41 | Personally, I use Mustad 3551 trebles for my replacement hooks. These hooks are easy to find in any size you would like. I am a little obsessed with sharp hooks. I find that the 3551s are some of the easiest hooks to sharpen. I have also used different styles of VMC hooks in the past. I love how sharp they are out of the box, but find them hard to re-sharpen after some use...also, they are normally more expensive than the 3551s. --Joe
