I did some poking around tonight, looks like Cass Lake being opened to spearing is still alive, as well as the statewide restriction on northern pike slots to a max of 60 lakes? Does anyone have any more concrete or up to date info on either of these two issues?

I go this today from a House Rep. I will know more tomorrow. Maybe Underhill can chime in he might know something else.

A few days left at the Capitol until adjournment on May 23.

I watched this live yesterday. Sen. Hansen broght seperate motions to remove the slot limit restrictions and to remove the Cass Lake provisions. Both motions were defeated.

We tried to resolve the Cass issue with a compromise bill that the Spearers rejected because it protected Pike, while giving them the fish they say they wanted to eat 3-5#'ers; implementing a 27-40 inch slot, they could have also taken a trophy. It added protection for Muskies in the trophy and natural lakes with a 54 inch min.
It was not going to make everyone happy but it would have been something we could have lived with and supported the area and businesses that are in the town.
They are now threatening to make an amendment to lower the Pike slots to 30 lakes from 125.
Its pretty obvious that they just want to spear anything on any lake they want since they also added that the DNR could not make any regulations against them to protect the lake.
This lake has no special regs other than the spearing ban and its doing very well; requiring no $ to stock or regulate.

Please call the Governor and ask for a veto, 1-800-657-3717

The funny thing is when I presented the compromise to Senator Carlson in person he thought it was a great idea and was all for it. He ended up not proposing the compromise. Now there is another bill that John mentioned that will not allow the DNR to make any regulation changes to Cass Lake if the fishery suffers as a result of the ban lift. Carlson indicated on the phone that they could try removing the ban and if it harms the fishery then the ban could be placed back on. He must of forgot that part when the regulation bill was included.

As of 1am.

2 line is dead
The pike slots bill has been amended to 90 instead of 60 lakes
Cass Lake spearing ban proposal is still intact.
