Posts: 158 Location: Burlington, WI | I know its not about muskies. Sorry. I wil be going to Hawaii for my honeymoon in the middle of October. We are planning on staying in Maui and Kuauii. On Maui we will be staying near Lahaina where I've heard there are quite a few charter operations located. In Kuauii we will be staying on the southern part of the island. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for charters on either of these islands. I'm not set on any particular fish as i've never been on a deep sea fishing charter before. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Kauaii is by far my most favorite destination. Do yourself a favor and do some of the hikes on the northern part of the island. Also, the town of hanelai has some incredible local restaurants. You will find the greatest ahi tuna. Make sure you get it as it does not compare back here in the states.

Posts: 470 Location: Blaine, MN | Wanderer, We stay in Kaanapali which is close to Lahaina, and your info is right on, if you head into town (Lahaina) and walk the marina you will find more than enough charters. The one I use is Captain Charlies, but I think the real name of it is Maui sport fishing or something like that, they have a huge fleet and allow you to share boats with others/combine groups to keep costs down a bit... In oct the mahi should be easier to find. After a long day of fishing take your new bride to the lahaina grill, my wife and I have fun there every year. And McDonalds serves Spam and eggs on the breakfast menu, craziest thing I ever saw... Enjoy Geno Edited by short STRIKE 3/8/2011 1:01 PM

Posts: 158 Location: Burlington, WI | Thanks guys. We're just starting to do research on all of the things to do on both islands. So any advice is definitely appreciated. Kauaii does sound awesome. Doing some remote hiking and/or canoeing would be cool. Thanks again. The Wanderer

Posts: 59 Location: Chicago western burbs | The first day we arrived in lahiana we had a general plan where we wanted to eat. I took about two hours the first day, drove to each restaurant we wanted, and got reservations for ocean side view at sunset. Smartest thing I did that week. I recommend doing the same. Also, we love Mala's on Lahaina. It is hawaiian tapas, so you get a little of everything. The lahaina luau was also good. Also, if you plan on doing the bicycle ride down the moutain I suggest the first day. You are going ot be on midwest time when you get there. You are going to wake up at 3 in the morning the first day ready to go. That happens to be the time you need to go up the volcano. Makes an easy adjustment. Kauai, I highly recommend the northern part. Small towns, hidden beaches, etc.... old hawaii. Did a great hike along the kanapali ? coast there. Hour hike, come to an isolated beach (do not go in water due to tides) Dolphins swimming below you while on the hike. Mountain goats on the cliffs. Awesome. Cant wait to go back.

Posts: 291 Location: Minneapolis | Kauai is one of my all-time favorite destinations. When I was first there in about 1994, I fished with True Blue Charters and captain Kamal Salibi. Fishing was great, and I see he is still in business. The Na'Pali Coast has jaw-dropping, stunning hiking. You can also take a zodiac trip along the coast, which I thought was a good trip. Hiking the Waimea Canyon is great. As others have said, the North shore is great; that's where access some of the Na'Pali Coast trails. In addition to the ahi tuna, you should also try ono (aka wahoo). Delicious! And fun to catch. One more tip for Kauai. Go to the Pono Market, a little Japanese-run grocery store, and get yourself some of the freshest, best sushi on the planet. Locals bring their catch straight to the store. Buy some ahi poke and seaweed salad and eat it on the beach. Take out does not get any finer! 4-1300 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa. Edited by rpike 3/16/2011 1:13 PM
