| At what depths will most muskies be located at ice out? Do they come to the shallow areas right away or does that take a few weeks? If you were going out a few days after ice out where would you make your first casts?

| I would check the biggest shallow flats with spinnerbaits and shallow suspending breaks and while I was around that flat I would check some of the deeper holes say move a few cast lengths away from the flats and chuck stuff like bulldogs or deep diving crankbaits. |

Location: Racine, Wi | I'd be fishing deeper outside of spawning areas and adjacent structure. Spencer wrote a good article in this months Musky Hunter that gives a pretty good idea of the movements of muskies from ice out to spawn. Give it a read and it'll give you a good idea of where to target. |

| Thanks for the advice. At what water temperature would you say most come up on the shallow flats? When you say deeper, about what depth are you referring to? Is it the immediate drop off of the flat? |

Location: Racine, Wi | I'm usually fishing deeper water up until the water hits 50 degrees or so although we've had action just up off of the breaks at times. By deeper water I mean the water just after the drop off (so out off of the flats). We commonly fish 20-30 feet of water on the lakes I am able to fish after ice out throwing cranks and dawgs. Watch for baitfish as well, as those areas usually will concentrate the fish in those areas. |
