I was just curious what the major differences are between the two reels. I know the 400B is newer and has a 3 screw sideplate vs a 2 screw sideplate for the original 400. I have one of each and the handle appears different as well. I just picked up the 400B today.

I am thinking about getting a few more, I am finding some good deals on used ones. I am tired of breaking my garcias all the time and my penns are useless in the cold. I have had my 400 for along time, only had two small easily fixed issues with it and I have friends that use them in below freezing without issues. I guess my ultimate question here is, should I be looking at the 400B over the 400? I know the TE is a great real too but I have yet to be first on a deal on one.

Pretty sure the main difference is the 400's have a lower gear ratio. I believe 4.7:1 verses to 5.0:1 of the 400B. Your right about the handle as well. I hate the handle on the 400 (hard plastic grips = super slick & hard to hold when wet or cold). I put a power handle on my 400B and put the paddle handle from the 400B on my 400. I've got a gator grip handle that I was using on the 400 until I put the 400B handle on it. You can have the gator grip if you want to try it out. I'll put it in the fridge right next to your chimichanga.

I did forget my chimichanga!

The other thing I noticed was the disengage button. The 400 button has more play and can deploy at a slight angle causing it not to always re-engage but this one seems to deploy straight and without play.

The only difference I am aware of is the 400B has the Anti-Rust bearings that the saltwater anglers love. Other than that they are basically the same.

The differences are gear ratio and handles. Like a previous post, I put a power handle on my 400B and put the paddle handle from the 400B on my 400.

The 400B is my "high speed" reel, and the 400 is my "low speed" reel.
