| I tried removing the lower unit from my '87 Evinrude recently to have the skeg repaired. I was able to drop it about 2 inches but it will not drop any further. I think I have properly disconnected the gear shift lever and the last time I removed the lower unit was about 5 years ago. Anything else I can look at other than taking it to a mechanic?
Thanks, Mike Blaise. |

If it only dropped about 2 inches, my guess is the gear shift lever that sits right under the main engine is the issue. that little spot is a very tough connection to get at. Usually requires removing the side cowling if possible.
I think you are awfully close....no need to take it to a mechanic. See if when you drop all the bolts if you can "feel" where the lower unit is hanging up (like on the shift linkage...etc.)
Good luck!!

Location: Milwaukee | I get the repair manuals from the library and they walk you through it step by step, maybe that would help.
Good luck! |

Could it possibly be the water pickup tube that feeds the speedometer holding you up? |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I had a Johnson GT and had this issue. VMS is got it right. You should be able to get a screw driver in there, but it'll be tight. Use a lot of lights and you'll be able to see it down there. It's not fun at all, but if I can do it then most anybody can.

| Thanks Guys,
I talked to a mechanic, again, and after removing the starter I was able to see what was going on. The shift shaft was still engaged. Once I got it dis-engaged the lower unit came off easily. Off to the weld shop.
Thanks again, Mike Blaise. |
