Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I, like most of you, have way too many Muskie reels, as well as walley bass panfish and salmon reels as. I store the bulk of my gear in an unheated Chicago area garage (yes I have an alram with surveillance system). I Back off the drag (after each outing) but want to know if the cold temps in the garage are otherwise damaging to the reels? They are safely out of the way in the rafters.

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I leave mine in my grandparents cabin with the drag backed off. That's in northen mn much colder than chi town. I haven't had any problems.

Posts: 1710 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Cold temps are not hard on reels. I have found that my reels perform better/longer between re-lube jobs when you use reel covers to store them. They keep the dust and dirt out both in the garage and to/from the lake.

Unless you bury 'em in the yard or drop 'em in the lake for the winter, There aren't many places you could store them that would be any worse than what we put them through fishing in November... Just sayin'...

Posts: 582 | the cold will not effect the reels. just make sure they are dry and lubed when you put them away. Depending on the line you have, make sure there is no water in it.

This is a good point. Everything on my boat, including whats in my rod locker will get covered in dust from going down gravel roads. It can reach places that water rarely does.
