| My dad owns a lcx-38c hd and is headed to rainy lake he borrowed a navionics rainy lake and lotws chip from a friend but his unit wont read the card. Does he need to get a download from lowrance to run this chip. |

Location: Wisconsin | Could be the Navionics region isn't selected in the map data??
Did you go into the Menu and Map Data, drop down to Navionics map choice and select the correct map region? Navionics chips do not load up on those units automatically.
When you inserted the chip, did the unit "chirp"? |

| My dad tends to live and die in his old school ways. So for christmas the family chipped in and got him this unit lets just say he is still throwing out his bouy and using land to mark his spots. I have not had time to go and help him but i do think that it could be possible that he has not selected the appropriate region like you stated. But from what he tells me is that the card does not register in his map data and there for he does not have the option to select a region. I have downloaded a update off of the lowrance web page and i am going to attempt to upgrade his software tonight Tj i will give you a ring later if my attemps fail.

Location: north central wisconsin | If your dad is not having trouble with the unit, I would not update the software on it. The lcx 38 is new enough that it should read most cards. However, unless it is a lakemaster, you will need to find your map type in addition to region of choice in the map data page. That said, lots of us updated to the newest software for lcx 25/lcx 111 units over the years, only to find the sonar readings in shallow water were better with the older software. I don't beleive that to be the case with the 38, but use a software that your unit runs well with and keep it. The nice feature with Lowrance and their customer support, is the ability to go back to an older software if you choose to. In addition to the assistance offered by the helpful folks here, I'd recomend talking with Linda Colt at LEI/Navico, for any further software issues you may have. She has the software issues for lcx units dialed.
