Posts: 199 Location: Nebraska | So, getting ready for the big trip. Lubed up several 5500s, a 5600, two 6600s. Went to do my 7000. Figured it was just upsized from the others. Found out that it was not when I pulled the handle side apart and a couple of springs went shooting out. Now, I have always followed the cleaning rules on one of the threads here. I was a bit taken aback when I saw what I had gotten into. Oh, well, might as well try to move on. Got the drag side cleaned up. (The factory does go overboard on the grease). I did reassemble the drag dry like the aforementioned reels. I hope this is correct. If not let me know. Anyway, I was trying to figure out how to get it all back together, holding it just right, but I couldn't get the drag back on with that lever thingy there. After much consernation, it occurred to me that the bail release really is a huge bolt head holding it on as opposed to a "fake" stamped bolt pattern in the steel that I thought it was. After getting it all apart, it then dawned on me that the whole thing is indeed built up on the back plate. So that made it make more sense. Now back to those springs. You know the super little fine one? Yes, I actually did find it. It took a bit to figure out where it went, along with the heavy spring bit got it together after a couple of beers. Finished up at 11:30 last night. Put it together and proudly cocked the bail. All was well. Cranked it, grind, grind grind. What the heck? Well, in my haste, I had put the bail release on backwards so the handle part was facing out instead of back over the frame. Of course, I realized this after I had taken it all back apart. Put it together again, did the palm side and level wind, reassembled and at midnight and another beer later, fired it over to much applause. Well, the dog looked at me with those "take me out for a pee" eyes. Pretty much the same thing. So, just becuase it looks like an oversized 6600, it's kind of, um, not. Hope those of you who can do this in your sleep got a bit of a chuckle out of it. Now, if you indeed did read all of this, are the drag washers suppsed to be assembled dry or greased? They are really waffle textured as opposed to the smooth washers on the 5 and 6 series Abus. Edited by Stein 8/11/2009 10:22 PM

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | You will need DRAG WASHER GREASE if you grease the drag washers DO NOT put reel grease on drag washers. The only 2 drag grease I know of is CAL'S & SHIMANO'S. I like to grease the drag washers I think it makes them start up smoother and water-proofs the drag washers, but you can install them dry if the washers are Carbontex washers. Here is some pics of how your reel should look like, The 7000's are a little different then a 5500-6500. Posts: 199 Location: Nebraska | Thanks for the good pics. That's exactly how I put the springs. I don't have any of the drag grease, so I went dry. I knew better than to use the reel grease, so it was brake cleaner then assembly.

Posts: 1270 | FYI if you are taking a 7000 with a lever on it apart the first thing you should do is remove the 9mm bolt that holds the lever on. Been there - done that!

I can do it in my sleep now...after I missed out on several hours of sleep doing it over and over a couple times the first time I attempted it

Posts: 3240 Location: Racine, Wi | Stein, that is a very funny story. I could see exactly what was happening the entire time, even down to the dog. I have had several similar incidents before I had any clue to what I was doing (although, it's always a dangerous endeavor when I take a reel apart. lol). Thanks for sharing that. I got a kick out of it.
