Location: Illinois | Conditions were super windy and cool for yesterday's 13th annual Spring Challunge on the Chain. About 80-some teams competed for the chance at prize money and bragging rights. Fishing reports showed fish were being caught during the week, including a pair of 48 inchers from none other that Nick and Kathy Cammarata prefishing on Friday. One fish was the spotted variety and believed to be the largest such caught on those waters. A big storm came and heavy rain Friday and Friday night gave many the impression the bite might be tough on Saturday. And during the tourney winds blew HARD all day long. Longtime fisherman of the Chain commented on never seeing waves so big there. Luckily, everyone finished the day safely and without any accidents. 80 percent casted and 20 percent trolled. Around 8, 8:30 the first fish was caught by a troller and it measured 38-1/2 inches. Many, including myself, felt like one fish could win this thing- considering last year only two fish were caught. Lots of reports of people raising fish on gliders or minnow baits, and lots of reports of smaller fish. My partner and I trolled for the first half of the day and then headed south to cast in some wind protected areas. This change in strategy paid off in a big way. My partner caught 38-1/2 and 41-1/2 inchers in the span of 45 minutes twitching minnow baits in shallow water near laydowns. It was all we needed to win, as we were the only team to double up on the day. Big fish of the tournament was a 45" caught by John Gobbo and teamate Mark Krause. In all 13 fish over 30" were caught, and many sub 30" (Nick & Kathy C. reportedly caught nine fish on Saturday, one over 30", a 32-1/2") Here are the results along with some pics: 1st Dave Schober/Mike Witowski - 38.5", 41.5" 2nd Mark Krause/ John Gobbo - 45" 3rd Tim Wallies/Matt Stevens - 38.5" 4th Mark Alfrejd/ Mat Haber - 38" 5th Martin Fudulov/Matt Zastrow - 36.25" 6th Ron Weider/Joe Borak - 36" John Ryan/Dave Lundgen - 36" David Hill Sr./David Hill Jr. - 36" 9th Mike Gleason/Rob Denkewalter - 33" 10th Nick Cammarata/Kathy Cammarata - 32.5" 11th Rick Miscinski/Gordy Lindy - 32" 12th Mark Lamont/Chris Von Allmen - 30" Congrats to all the placers and thanks to the FRV chapter on a great tourney! Location: Illinois | Thanks Lambeau! I'm really proud of my partner, Dave, he really came through when the chips were down! I had a BLAST netting these fish. Good luck this year! | ||
