Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Lures with barbless hooks

A bunch of the guys were sitting around talking after our chapter meeting the other day. The topic of barbless hooks came up. Some said barbless hooks would protect the fish, others said it wouldn't make much difference because nobody would fish with them. I can see were barbless hooks would be better for the fish, it would ease unhooking and thus produce less stress. But I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable having barbless hooks on my bait when Mrs. Pig is on the line.

So I have a couple of questions. How many guys fish with barbless hooks? How many would buy a bait with barbless hooks on it? If you did buy a bait with barbless hooks would you replace them with hooks that have barbs? Do you see barbless hooks as a positive thing or a negative thing? Thanks

I'm 100% barbless on all my multiple/treble hook lures. But I don't see much sense in manufacturer's offering barbless option- to easy to do it yourself. I can imagine what a 50" Muskie would feel like w/ it was attached to your body/hand via a barbed treble hook. That's why I fish barbless, i.e., for my own safety. Did it once with a hefty smallmouth on a Canadian flyin w/ #11 Rapala. Pulled the barbed hook myself- Not going to happen again. Plus it's a bitch to have to stop fishing just because you got stuck w/a hook. If I lose a fish because of being barbless - so what! It means I wasn't playing the fish correctly. Plus it makes unhooking/releasing the fish much easier.

I will never go barbless. I went barbless one summer for bass, and I lost a ton of fish. If the fish gets the tiniest bit of slack, it will through the lure. Just about every jump would result in a lost fish.

With the way muskies thrash their heads, I would imagine that you would lose a lot of fish. Plus with the aid of hook cutters, removing the hooks from fish is easy. No more ripped jaws!

Just my opinion,
Scott

I asked the question about whether one should go to barbless or not, and someone brought up the fact that a barbless hook can penetrate a fish much easier/deeper.

I think one could pinch the barb point making it easier to remove yet still have a small portion of the barb intact to prevent total slippage![:sun:]
