Many of you don't know him, but Johnny Bratland, of Vermilion Bay, passed away yesterday after some complications with hip surgery. It is a sad day for all in the lil' town of Vermilion Bay, or for those who've actually gotten the opportunity to know him. This year will make 20 seasons I've been fishing Eagle, and 20 years I've known Johnny.

He has reefs named after him on Eagle Lake. He owned and ran one of the largest gas stations / corner shops for years. He was "the guide" for years on Eagle Lake. He probably forgot more about muskie fishing than I'll ever learn! He was a great fisherman, good guide, but most importantly, a good friend.

God bless you friend!!

Very sorry to hear that, myself.
He was a good guy. Always treated people well
and always willing to help you out.
Folks like him aren't replaced. You just hope someone else steps up.

Don, How old was Johnny? We stayed at his place on canyon several times. After he sold the resort I believe he stayed on his place on Eagle. Standup guy he was. Does Arnie still own the diner & shop on the corner?

I think Johnny was like 78-80 if I remember right. Yep...I used to visit him on Canyon myself! Johnny was actually one of our first guides on Eagle when we bought Andy Myer's Lodge. Stand-up guy for sure...and tougher than nails!! Arnie actually went into the insurance agency after selling his places in Vermilion Bay.
