| Let's say you have 1st generation lure and it is unique. You feel it has potential but, no time to develop it. How do you sell the idea? To whom? |

Location: Minnesota | Hard thing..... Hard to keep your idea "your idea" without some type of IP (patent) and then it woudl be a nightmare to keep it locked up tight. Best idea is to make it, brand it, then sell the brand. If it is a real good idea and you can get a patent then go that way and sell the patent to a manufacturer who can then fight the legal battles. I am sure some other ways work but, this has been a hard thing for many. If it is a good lure you will do well. Maybe make a few and just shop it around. I for one would be happy to work with someone and pay them a royalty on a per lure basis that I sell. It all just has to make $$$ and one thing I have found it that there is not a log of margin in making fishing lures. Hence all the lure manufacturing going to China.

If you truly feel the lure is a winner you could go about selling it in a number of ways. I personally wouldn't bother with a patent because someone can simply make a small change and start building their own version. It would probably be better to find a honest and reputable builder to work with you on the concept. If you don't have someone you trust then you can of course go it on your own and see how things go. If the lure is good and you build it to be reliable, you will have plenty of customers.

I would say the best example of how to do this would be the guy that made the Rumbler. He was doing small shows with handmade crankbaits (hence the name Crazy Cranks) but came up with an idea, built some prototypes, and found some of the more widely known and respected names in the musky community (Pearson/Johnson/Lindner) to push the lure. Walla! The company, with all of the buzz caused by those names, got bought by Nature Visions - the company that makes Aqua View.
