Location: Tomahawk, WI | Since I caught my first legal musky last summer my mom has wanted to try her hand at muskie fishing too. My problem is getting the right rod and reel. She isn't very tall at about 5'4". I'm thinking something like a 7.5' or 8' MH rod for easier casting. I also want to get a good reel, probably an Abu, what gear ratio should I look for? She isn't going to want to throw huge or hard retrieving baits, probably some smaller spinners, prop topwaters, smaller crankbaits, some rubber lures, etc.
If you have any suggestion or experience, I'm all ears.

Location: Gurnee, Illinois | If you have a Gander Mountain by you, they have some decent inexpensive rods in a variety of lengths. Something around a 7' MH would be a good all around rod. If you mom has small hands, look at the 5500 series from abu. These are easy to palm, and the standard 5:3/1 ratio will be just fine.

| i second moss backs response. I have the combo he suggested and I love it. I picked up a 7' advantage( the black one) gander rod about 75 bucks and paired it with a 5500 c3. The real feels a bit undersized to me but for a woman it probably would be better. I use 65lb test power pro and it seems to work reel nice. It almost is as light as the 7' medium bucktail gloomis I have. |

Location: Pound, WI | GM must sell a combo rod/reel package. the Guide Series reels are Pfleugher and easy to handle and palm with small hands. Probably cheaper than Abu.

| Teach her to use the foregrip and forget about palming the reel. Then use any good quality musky reel. The Abu SSC3 is a nice inexpensive model that has the thumbar release which a lot of folks find very convenient. It's available in both right or left hand versions. As for rods, I've had very good success with women and kids using the Fig Rigs 7'2" MH fast action rod. It's really light and will get the job done for the baits you're talking about.

Yup that's a good idea. Should cut down on birdnests and last longer, I'm going to look into the SSC3 and probably the GM rods the next time I'm there, I've looked at the before and they are comfortable to me, I think she'd like thumbar release alot better too, especially since she has some arthritis.
