Recent cold snap has brought water temps into the 40's on most lakes.Turnover is virtually over and late fall fishing conditions have arrived.I have only been out for muskies in the past several days with mixed,but improving results.Live bait is working well,but better on the small and medium size lakes.One very large key to success has been waiting the fish out on one or two spots.Feeding windows can be short this time of year and being on the best spot with patience has produced the best results.On lakes that still have some nice green cabbage artificials like the Magnum size SLOW TEASE jerkbait have been magic over the weed tops worked very slowly as they were designed to do.This is my first Season using that bait and am more than impressed.HAWG SEEKER tackle makes them( I have no affiliation ).Just a great fall lure period.For deeper presentations Im throwing soft plastics like the Shack Attack Sub Zero and working them slowly over rocky structural elements.The entire key for artificials now is speed.While there are no absolutes in Muskie fishing,slowing down your baits to match the slower metabolism of cold water muskies is very close to an absolute.

| I spent my weekend in this area but not on PI. Fishing was spotty at best. We managed four fish and all were caught during short feeding windows. As the day progressed fishing seemed to get better, with our best action coming between 4 - 6. Saturday night during that time frame we caught 2 and saw 5 others.
We spent time on some deep clear lakes...that did not produce anything for us. We moved to a bigger lake with less depth to it, and more rock/gravel. This seemed to be the ticket. Wherever we found gravel shorelines with deeper water near by, or rock bars/points with deep water near by we found fish.
Cranks worked in a finesse manner, getting them to really "kick out" seemed to be all they were interested in. We threw the book at them...but towards the end we were all throwing DDD's and Warner baits. Cranking them into the rocks, then giving them the jukes (kicking them out) all the way in. PAUSE your bait as it approaches the boat...we had some wild follows this weekend, and caught two or fish on the pause at the boat. Cool way to catch them.

Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | A friend of mine fished a small lake about 20 miles away. Boated 2 on Sat. and 6 on Sun. All fish came on suckers in 8-10 ft. @ weed edges. Saw the pics. today. Fish ranged from 33-46". Water temps were 44-46. |

Location: Waukesha, WI | I wish I was able to go, but I have a wedding to attend Saturday in MSP.
For what it is worth, I was nearby P.I. this weekend in Boulder Junction. Sunday the rod eyelets and reels started to freeze. The lake was about 600 acres and meat was the ticket. A Reef Hawg scored on an 8 too. Follows on cranks and hair too. |
