esox Hawk...well, my post wont be worth much, maybe someone who fishes there can add to this. Rowan is pretty clear lake. I think you are the guy looking for Fly In, right? well, Neilson's is a great fly in. BUT...Rowan is clear, the muskies are big, but not real easy to catch (from what i've gathered the past 7 years). If you are a seasoned musky nut and going w/ guys who have caught plently before, then you'll be fine. but if if some of you are newer to this sport, Rowan might play out tough. Yes, all lakes/rivers are tough at times. Muskies are especially tuff... I know other speicies seem fairly easy to catch to Rowan, but i have seen alot of Rowan musky trip reports that include zero, one, two muskies for the week. that's tough. I'm NOT knocking the lake or the lodges there. if you happen to be there when the muskies are realy really going, you can get a few. my only point to this post is if ya'll aren't real seasoned musky nuts, maybe try some darker waters or a place proven for more action...BUT if you looking for that one big HOG...check it out.

thanks a bunch
sounds like you know your stuff. Any suggestions on other spots to try? We've been doing the NW Ontario fly-in thing and have had great success on nice northerns (usually a dozen over 40 in a week) and like everyone else lots of walleye.

I voted for LOTW - however, some guys in our group think there will too many people and prefer the "isolation" of a fly-in, I've heard LOTW is so big you can have plenty of water to your self. Since I spend 95% of my trip casting, I've always wanted to target a muskie water, however, with 8 guys, it's tough to get everyone on the same page - (schedules, what they want/expect out of trip) If the group takes a year off - I still want to go somewhere - I'm a teacher/high school football coach so my summers are pretty open. Any suggestions from any muskie hunters is much appreciated.

Hi, ive been to Rowan a couple times, great trip, Don and his wife are great hosts, foods great, saw some monster fish. Caught some , biggest was 48 but had 50 inch follows everyday. It is tough frishing but if you enjoy clear water and seeing big fish its a great trip. Shingwak resoty on Whitefish bay LOTW is another good place if you like to fish clear water and not a lot of other boat traffic, its a drive to resort. If you opt for Rowan let me know and ill give you some marked spots.

Hi,

I'm no expert, but have been to Rowan three times in the past three years.

1st year - stayed about 8 days. Decent weather. Moved a lot of fish, up to 50" range, but didn't put one in the boat until the last morning (flew out 1 hour later). That fish was 41."

Last year - stayed about 11 days. Again, OK weather. Moved 55 fish, put two in the boat, largest was 39.5." Again saw fish in the 50" class. Should have put at least one more in the boat.

This year - stayed 7.5 days. Caught six fish, up to 42." Lots of follows again, and lost one fish in the 48" range and another in the 40" range.

The first two years we stayed at Nielsens. This year we stayed at Rowan Lake Lodge.

Rowan has a ton of great structure. There are just so many good places to fish. My experience has been that you will see a lot of fish, and we always see at least a couple of bigger fish. Last year people saw fish in the 60" class - I've never seen anything that big there, but am sure they're there. I also think it's a tough lake to fish. I would say it's great if you're planning to go back, because the knowledge of the lake definitely pays off over time. Also, your first time up I would recommend staying at Nielsens because RLL doesn't offer musky guides, and you want to go out with Paul or Don to learn some spots. After going out with those guys a few times, I'm pretty comfortable with my knowledge of the lake - I definitely don't know all the spots, or even half of them, but I know a lot of places I can fish in different parts of the lake.

It's a great lake, and if you're looking for a lake to learn and come back to, I'd say go for it. If this is more of a once-in-a-lifetime type deal, you may want to consider other lakes if you're looking for more action. My partner was skunked on his last two trips there, and I talked to another couple of guys (staying at Nielsens same time I was at RLL) this year who went a week w/o putting a fish in the boat. Lots of follows, and a few hits, but no hookups. That's not uncommon.

If you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer.
