Posts: 440 | I fish a shad base lake quite a bit and it seems that the fish really don't want anything to do with bucktails. I have put together quite an assortmant and nothing seems to get eaten. Does anyone have decent action on the shad base lakes with bucktails? The best action I have seen was in September. Seems to me a muskie should be muskie no matter where it swims but I am wonder if the main forage base(shad) could be the problem. Any tips, size, speed, color, or whatever would be greatly appreciated because I am at a loss. Thanks.

Posts: 4266 | I know that you can catch tons of bass on spinnerbaits in shad based lakes, don't see why a CJ's spinnerbait wouldn't work. As far as bucktails, you might want to match the size and color of the blade to the size of the shad. I would think that a basic white bucktail would work, as well as a white/grey or white/chartreuse bucktail with a silver blade in the size of your choosing for the situation. Beav

Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | Lake Shelbyville, which is a shad based lake, got a really hot bucktail bite the last weekend in June. The colors that weekend didn't even really matter as long as it was a larger bucktail. My partner and I were fishing black hair/bronze blade but chartreuse/silver or firetiger worked as well for others. What we found was that the fish turned on at dawn and shut down completely by 9:30am. No evening bite was to be had either. | bucktqails can produce big on shad lakes. White with copper or gold blades seems to be the best color option with september and october being the best months to throw them.

Posts: 440 | Thanks guys, I had a feeling that the color white was going to come up. Hate that color. I have three tails rigged and ready for the next trip out, I am going to force issue a little. If thats all a person throws that is all he will catch fish on is my thinking. Could be the big zero too.
