Posts: 7128 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I live in Chicago with very limited muskie opportunities without driving at least an hour....so most of my time I'm not chasing muskies. Smallies in the rivers Coho/kings on the big pond Green carp (largies) when I only have 3 hours. Crappie/bluegill because I like the devi's lettuce while I kayak. When I was younger (no wife, no dogs, no trying to save at all) a 3 hour drive each way with 3 hours of sleep and back home at night was super fun. Now, gotta balance time/money/engery. Stupid priorities.

Posts: 1697 Location: Brighton CO. | I've always enjoyed the early season non-Muskie trips, casting smaller Mepps, Rapalas (and other small plugs), Jigs and Twistertails Beetle Spins, and twitching minnows and catching everything from Muskies, Pike, Smallmouths, Walleyes, Perch, Crappies. Fishing before the Summer crush of people and fishing out of the way places with small boats or a Canoe. And with lighter tackle. Here at home it's small Bass and panfish lakes or Trout fishing is good before the summer heat.

Posts: 32969 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I fish for big crappies aggressively all open-water season. A 15 or better is equal to a low-50s muskie to me. My best so far in Wisco is a 17" black crappie I caught fishing a small lake with my son Keith. I caught it on a Kenders tungsten jig; love tungsten in the Summer. Yes, I do own the BPS Panfish rod. Nice rod! I bought one, by the way. Posts: 1697 Location: Brighton CO. | Great story Steve, I think last year you had a little film posted with you catching all kinds of different fish on a little jig and you opened my eyes to fishing with braid rather with light mono. Yes I wished the real manufactures would go back supping two spools when you buy a real. My Grandpa been dead for 30 years this year but he would catch big Crappies on his cane pole and take them into Jack's Sport And Marine and win the weekly contest with 14.5-15 inchers.

![]() Location: PA Angler | I start with trout. Then I’ll do Muskie at camp. When I’m local to home I’ll do some carp and cats. Edited by Solitario Lupo 6/10/2026 10:25 AM
