| I'll start with a question...
Is there such a thing as setting the hook too many times or too hard? Within reason of course.
I had hooked or DID I the fish of the year and possibly of a lifetime yesterday on a favorite jerk/glide bait. After about 30-45 seconds of slow powerful head shaking the lure came out and I had no fish..[:blackeye:]
Upon examining the lure one leg of 4x 5/0 VMC was straightened to about a 80 degree angle.
I was fishing with another guide friend and I can tell you that he got a better look at her than I did and estimated her between 52-55". I can tell you that I have never felt weight like that before in my life on the end of a rod.
So as I'm cryin the blues....The question in my mind is...
Did I ever have her hooked...?
And yes my hooks are sharpened to the point that I literally have friends/clients who are afraid to get a bait out of my Lakewoods boxes.

| I have had the same thing happen OH so many times...One can second guess, and assume the hook was buried and straightened, or it could have been simply lodged in the jaw without penetrating, and straightened.
I am still lamenmting the absolute Super Tanker I lost on the Goon this last July, and the 5/0 on my Undertaker was at an 80 or so....[:((] |

| Yea I know how you feel Steve....Gotta hunch the one on Goon was bigger though...[]
The bait was a "Phantom" 3 or 4 fish in the last 3 weeks and the paint is hardly scratched. The previous fish had the hooks burried. One picture is going to be on my website soon under the proper fish handling/cutting hooks page.
I know I never slid the bait in her mouth as there are no scratches on it only teeth marks...
61/2 foot MH St.X rod with 80pound Specton and you know that I''m no small person......
Things that make us go hmmmmmmmm..[:knockout:]
Hey Jono...if your reading this you can expect I''ll be calling in the morning to find out the full details of your suckers are able to get better hooksets than me...[]

| Sorry to hear about the heartbreak, Mark. Next time, my friend.
I don't think you can set too hard but I do think you can set too much. I don't set more than twice. Just a theory but I think if you set too much you can actually rip the hook holes bigger thus making is easier for the hooks to back out. Especially if you set when the fish has a good leverage angle.
If you got a bent hook, I would say you had her stuck good and fate just took over. That's a nice fish to straighten a VMC!
I'm going to need a little more one-to-one with you and how to fish gliders. You seem to have the knack!
Chin up and get ready for the next one,
Jono

| Mark, I understand your bitterness...I feel your pain! 5 yrs. ago the biggest musky I'll ever hook bent the hook out on a 6" Poagy Tail jig while trolling + I was sick(physically)[;)]....you will return someday + catch that fish....let me know when you go! Sorry to hear as stuff like that stays w/ you for years + pops up from time to time. Concentrate on other stuff now as this will pass.....[:0] [:sun:] |
