I buy a lot of old antique fishing tackle and just picked up two p209 reels new on fathom 8 1/2' penn rods. Would these make good trolling rod/reels? They were never used. Rods are medium action. For $30 ea I can use them for salmon on the river but I was hope they will work for trolling musky. Thanks,

Randy

Randy;
Those are fine trolling outfits.Low speed , sturdy reels.I used to
use 109s for running Spoonplugs .Those rod and reels are what is usually
recommended for trolling on St.Claire .Look up the Rocketmans site or
hope that MuskieKid can get his tiger site going again.He had a wealth
of trolling information there.

Randy,
The Penn 209's will work fine if your using Powerbraid line,Leadcore Line needs thge 309M or the 340 GTI for line capasity.The only thing that is negative is the gear ratio,I believe 3:1,not good for bringing in crankbaits fast to clean weeds off all day when there are lots of floaters.That's why we use the higher ratio Penn GTI 320 & 340 Reels.
But for many years back in the 70's,Penn 209's were the main trolling reel here on the Niagara river.You got a great deal on your purchase!

I have an old Penn 209 that is about 50 years old and still works fine. I use it for saltwater trolling, but it would work fine for freshwater. I also use a Penn Mag 10 for trolling spoonplugs on a Buck Perry Spoonplug rod. A lot of guys would laugh at one of these old 5 1/2 ft. solid glass rods. However, they are perfect for that sort of fishing. I also use it as a down-rod for the propwash.

Rocketman has one of the best sites I've seen for setting up your boat for trolling. http://muskie-lures.com/rocketman/index1.htm If you check out his site, make sure to look around a bit...there's some stuff that is quite funny there if you look around a bit.

Thanks for the plug for the site. It is back up: http://www.toothycritters.com Most is back, but I'm still working on it.

I have 6 Penn 209's spooled with 10#xt for trolling eyes. Work great and I think they would be better for skis' anyone interested in a trade for a couple diawa 27's? Otherwise I need to find screws for one 209 missing a couple!
Good Luck

Great sites!! Thanks for all the help. I will give some of the tips try when spring gets here. I also plan a St. Clair trip this summer. Thanks again.
