Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | I have never had as much trouble with missing fish on suckers as this season. I have always placed a single treble down low and just behind the rear bottom fin with success, not this year.
Hearing of people putting single trebles up high right next to the dorsal.
Whats your best placement for a single treble.....pics would be cool if you got em or can get em.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Greg, my rigs have a treble on each side and one small one hooked just above the lips. I caught two yesterday(35" and 43 3/4"), both were hooked in the side of the mouth. Early this season I caught two with the front treble. I guess three is over kill but you can't knock it when its almost 90%. I lost two this year and they came off when the fish went air-born. I think it was a "in your face" move by the fish. Both fish were in the mid 40's and got a great look at them.
I like to keep one back and one forward. Both hooks are along side of the sucker. I make them two inch and three inch in length.

I use a single treble on my suckers (12"-16"), and hook it LIGHTLY under the skin right near the dorsal. Hook up percentage is pretty decent and the sucker action is nearly completely unencumbered.
My theory is if a sucker is in the fishes yap odds are extremely high that the dorsal area is included. It does not matter which way the sucker is in the fish's mouth, a hookset, with the fish moving away from you, should result in the hooks buried in the corner of the mouth. Theory is not 100% true in practice, but true enough for me not too change. |

I guess I always put em low cuz I heard that the sucker gets grabbed from the bottom, thus leaving the dorsal exposed (or sticking out) of a musky's mouth.
I can see if they horizontally t-bone them, that the hook up high would stick em good.
doesnt matter what size..12", even 18" suckers?? one treble right next to the dorsal up high?
come to think of it, my sucker hits in the past (with success and mounted "low") were from suckers that werent hanging very deep. This year I am running my meat almost on bottom, so they would have to t-bone it and not grab it from the bottom........maybe thats whats goin on.

Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | Anybody catch Gillespie's show this week? He was fishing with Rob Manthei and showed a good indication why a lot of sucker hits aren't hooked. They were fishing in clear enough water to see the fish take the sucker and quite often it had just grabbed the tail end. It took quite a bit of goading by Rob to get the muskie to get a good hold and start to move off before he set the hook. On darker waters or a deeper presentation it's a good bet that it wouldn't have been a successful hookup. In some circumstances a quick strike rig is a misnomer. |
