I have a Humminbird 300TX and have just installed the sensor for water temp and boatspeed. The temp is reading ok but the boat speed is not acurate as when we are under way on smooth water and we have been up to speed for a stretch of time, the speed constantly changes on the screen. I followed directions on the mounting but is there a possiblity that the sensor is not into the water far enough or mounted in the wrong place? It is at leatst 8 inchs from the tranaducer and 8 inchs from the motors lower unit ( mounted between the two). I have a tri-hull and the bottom is smooth and free of ridges or obstrution in front of the sensor. Can anyone give me any ideas on this one?
Thanks guys,

Unless your unit has speed calibration......your best bet for "true" boat speed is GPS...the "paddle wheel" speed gauges are not accurate and will not be accurate in the 10th's of a MPH

Thank you 52 I will check my manual. The unit I have is not compatible with a GPS unit. It would have tobe a seperate system. I have been using a hand held GPS but It can't give me the speed of the boat. Thanks again,

You wont find an "add-on" gps for the 300, you'd have to move up to a Matrix Humminbird to do that....why cant you get boat speed with your hand held GPS???

I would think you should be able to get speed out of your handheld. I had a garmin 12 and now have a Garmin 76 plotter. Both have speed.

I think you can set different views on them, it just may be that you have the speed view hidden......check it out once.Thats the best way to get slow speed readings is with GPS.

Stan,

The sensor may be affected by the water turbulance of the propeller at higher speeds or it may be just a little too high on the transom. Most have slotted adjustments built into the bracket, try moving it down a little. If the speed stays constant while trolling that's what matters, at least to me, so don't sweat it.

Your hand held GPS should give you speed over ground (SOG) which should be accurate unless you're going really slow (under 1 or 2mph).
