Anyone ever make a bucktail using strictly pheasant feathers as the "tail" section.
Going on a club pheasant hunt this Friday, and since I started making bucktail spinners this summer thought it would be something to try.

if anyone could post pictures for ideas that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I like the idea. And like you I just started making bucktails. Keep us posted.

I've used various types of feathers and the one thing that I have had the most trouble with is the quill on larger feathers (namely turkey and pheasant). My favorite has been a combo of bucktail with accents of grouse feathers, which are smaller and have a nice undulation underwater. If you are using the feathers exclusively you may want to shave/flatten the top half of the end of the quill so that it will lay flat when tied, which should help to create a fuller look. The full quills tend to roll to one side or another and can leave a patchy look. They will also pop outwards if tied with too much pressure, causing them to flare.

Some of the coolest looking baits I've ever made were with pheasy! You can get at least 3-4 different types of feathers that are handy at different times & parts of the bait. I seperate the different kinds of feathers by their color, size & part of bird. Orange w/ the black spot & short blue/brown ones are great on top to finish ties. The longer greyish blue/ brown ones breathe really well like marabou & make up the bulk of the tie. Tail feathers look great but need to be snipped & tied straight & stored straight or they can make a gnarly curl. I don't have the image resize but I'll see if I can get a pic up of my fav "Pleasant Pheasant"
