I never was a really big plastic worm guy for bass even though I always acknowledged their superior effectiveness. I just didn't like the idea of going that slow and just raising my rod tip every few seconds. However, lately the bass at a couple of places I fish (including my backyard pond), have been uncooperative in aggressively chasing lures and spinnerbaits. So, I felt compelled to put on a 10 inch power worm and learn to worm fish so I could at least catch something even in the worst conditions. Shouldn't be too big a surprise to hear that even in the worst conditions (raised murky water due to run off, cold front etc.) they still go after that worm when its put right in their face. It's also helped me to find their exact locations.

So, I started to wonder - what is the analogous lure/technique for musky that has the same effect - something that they can't seem to refuse and will get them to bite even in the toughest conditions when they are hunkered down or really in a negative mood. In other words "what is the plastic worm for musky"? Doesn’t have to be a plastic though...

An addendum erratic movement followed by that pause.

Another addendum: preferably with something you can get down right in front of their faces.

Those are great answers. I probably need to work at and develop my pause even more when retrieving a multitude of lures. I was thinking the Suick was one of the lures that can be that effective on musky, in tough conditions, as well. It’s probably because of its realistic movements and it inherently incorporates that pause so well.

Not just Suicks, many jerkbaits and pull-pause baits.
