What waters to you guide on?

How has this season been for you?

Have you seen better action on stained vs. clear bodys of waters this year with the odd weather we have been having?

Hi Jason, by the way, it was a pleasure to meet you at Three Lakes a couple of weeks ago! I have 91 different lakes in my arsenal that I guide on. The action has been up and down this season, the goofy weather has had alot of my areas guides including myself scatching our heads, but for the most part and for the conditions we have faced it hasn't been to bad, my boat has taken 41 legals to-date with the largest being 47ins, all have been released so far. The pattern that seems to be the most consistent in my boat for muskie has been suspended fish over deeper water (the depth I'm fishing is relavent to the total depth of the lake) The feeding window for the shallower action is very short, sometimes lasting no more than 30 to 45 mins. and the morning window has been best for me, after 10a:m I start to head out to deeper water. As for what type of water seems to be best, I would have to say that off-color water has been my best producer (not real dark, but not gin-clear either) Hope this helps, take care my friend.

One more Chuck- regarding the suspendo bite you mentioned on the reports page.

What science do you use for picking open water casting locations? Thanks!

Hi Duke, Ther are two things that I look for that will dictate were I'm going to fish suspended, first the presnce of bait-fish aka, cisco's, perch, crappies, and even walleye's. The second is I try fish the deep water that is right next to or ajaicent to a prime shallow structure or main lake hump or bar are my rules of thumb, but don't get stuck with just those two, there are times I'll go right down the middle of the lake over the deepest water with no structure at all. ( on the first two, if you come across bait-fish holding in deep water right next to that prime shallow shelf or flat spend some time there!) also just because your over deep water don't count out bucktails and surface baits, you would be surprised how many fish my boat has taken on those baits over 50ft of water. Hope this helps.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for taking the time to answer all our questions. I fish a stained shallow lake, max. 17' depth and avg. depth of 8'-10', with cabbage at 5' or less. I'd like to fish more of the open water and was wondering what bait/color you'd go with to start.
It has a sucker, walleye, perch, crappie forage base with not much mid-lake structure other than some cribs that we've installed.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Buddy, How I would fish the eco-system you decribed is, first on my color choice, with crank 0r jerk-baits I'd stick with your forage base, sucker or walleye but don't be afraid of throwing something a little different if matching the hatch doesn't work also with stained water I prefer baits that make sound aka rattles or a clicking while working it. On the depth, since its fairly shallow and your targeting fish thats off any structure the 4 to 12ft range is where I would be, Don't forget to try bucktails the'll come up and get it, I've caught 30lb class fish on tails over 50ft of water, the color of the tail is not that important to me as the size and color of the blade (thats my theory at anytime with bucktails) with suspended I prefer either a french or willow leaf blade. For dark water, brass or copper and green, orange or chartruese. Hope this helps my friend.
