You know the only reason is because they want someone to ask them how big it is. The ego people are getting in this sport is getting out of control. I disagree a bit with this. I put the odd pic on FB, I never state a size....why...because some joker is gonna argue it no matter what you say. Truthfully I think its the people that NEED to know how big others fish are are that have issues with their ego. Screw it, let them stew in their jealously that someone else may catch bigger fish than them. We have a local Ottawa area guide, that claims to have the live release world record at 62 1/4..... Literally, no joke , every time you would see him coming off the water he would have a 40 pound 50 incher or two, and claim to have lost, or seen a fish pushing 60 inches or 60 pounds...every time...without fail. This river is good, but not that good. Lost of very good anglers fish it, and 54's are really rare....60's....hahahaha I wouldnt be shocked to hear a 60 come from the Dirty O

I even shy away from telling family members too much about it. Oh for shame..

Posts: 34 | Well, at least when you say " the fish was that big" spreading your arms, you're probably not that far away from the thruth when you actually catch one. If you've been to the sport long enough you'll know when someone is bs or not but then again for ocassional angler, stories of size of the fish or even catching one swearling your stick in water might seem far from believable. Point of perspective differs significantly depending on location. Everything in modaration. Especially when it comes to sports. Edited by Unionski 10/7/2017 1:47 AM

Posts: 1220 | I must be some sort of a (insert your own favorite female adjective) but on the rare (I know, I know) days when I have a fish worth bringing into the boat, I put on a glove. The only way you will see my hands destroyed by these stinking, slimy, SOB’ s is if you were there the first time it happened. Just don’t know why we think stupid is the red badge of courage. And, all the ladies really love my nice soft hands, and that’s no “lie.”

Posts: 34 | Categorising is another topic. What you think clever, for "other" people might sound as cynical and offensive. Again, when you mix black and white, usually comes out as grey, and many shades of it. For the lack of better words, stupis is as stupid does. Just to simplify. Probably another category should be created named trolling considering all the upper states allow it. Just to replace winternet and kinda point stupid where to look for. Now thats darn funny. Posts: 333 Location: SE Wisc | I don't get it either. I'm at a point in my fishing life where I'm confident in my abilities to catch fish and feel I'm usually making the right decisions on the water. (This is what makes fishing challenging and makes the catch that much more rewarding) I tell people, who ask, exactly how I did and what I caught or didn't catch. I don't always say where but will give info like find the sand grass, mid lake humps, wind blown points, etc. If they need more info than that they probably won't catch a fish anyways

Posts: 1220 | Now that I think about this , nobody asks if I even caught a fish, or if I know a good spot, or might suggest a bait choice. It’s more a pitiful look like you’d give the last puppy in the window that’s never going to be adopted. Do you see where modesty has gotten me? The heck with this, I’m going to YouTube and learn how to photoshop good fish onto my posts. And, I’m also going to get one of those ridiculous huge nets that take up a whole boat.....cuz now I need it! Yea, the Junkman has the biggest muskies from this day forward. And, I’m telling everybody!

Location: Contrarian Island | I heard of a guy claiming he got a 54 + x 29 or something but he won't show the pic to even his best friends... when asked to see it he makes up some bs excuses... so you catch a fish that likely was the MN state record and not 1 of your friends has even seen the pic? Ok then... yah sure it was 29" around. the ol 29" internet girth... Edited by BNelson 10/11/2017 9:30 AM

Ok then... yah sure it was 29" around. the ol 29" internet girth... ;) I was hoping to see a picture of the claimed 54.5 X 29 too. He read my PM and not even a reply back. I think at the time he would have been like 20 years old. Sometimes kids imaginations exaggerate a little but a picture would speak volume in a fish of this size.

Location: Contrarian Island | I could post pics of some fish many would think are in the low to mid 20 inch girths that don't even hit 20... my belief is 99% of the claimed 25+ girths were never actually girthed, they just guessed based off what they saw reported on the ol interweb of other falsely claimed girths... or I just need to buy a new girth tape that starts at 5. Posts: 8792 | First time I measured the girth of a fish I was pretty shocked. Just for fun, I went around measuring the girth of various oval shaped things just to see what it took to get to 30". My guess is a lot of the guys posting girth measurements don't even have a tape.

I agree. The first fish I girthed was a 48.5'' (my PB at the time). I was shocked it "only" girthed at 20-21.

Posts: 2337 Location: Chisholm, MN | The first one I measured was a 48" as well. 16" girth! Ha! It was basically average for a June fish. I measured a smallmouth at 16" once as well.

Location: Contrarian Island | and that is the problem with the internet, guys think a 48 x 20 isn't fat...that is 100% incorrrect that is actually a pretty fat one... oh and Baby Mallard it wasn't a claimed 54.5 x 29, it was 54.5 x 29.5. which is just under 60 lbs...I bet Larry Ramsell would like to see the pics on that one...lol, I'm sure they will never surface.

Posts: 556 | I agree with the girth measuring---Most have never done it--just estimates and in my experience--the estimated girth is usually off to the high side-- I got a LATE FALL Fat 48" once--personal best and when I measured the girth at 23-- I thought it was wrong--I would have probably guessed 25--maybe more----It looked GIANT to me at the time--especially because it was the largest I had caught....

I think it looked GIANT because it was. Most people will not see a fish with a 25'' girth much less catch one.

Posts: 79 | In 2000 I think it was I caught at that time a thick 52" fish that was a PB I girthed at 21". Because of popular musky magazine claims and the start of internet girths, I thought surely I had girthed the fish wrong and gradually changed it. Finally a buddy who was very experienced set me straight. He saw the picture and said it does look like a 21" girth and that it was a nice fish. Last year in November I had a big fat 53" hit the net. It girthed at 23". I pull the cloth tape tight! Yes I have some very big girthed fish in excess of 25", but most are around 20-21 on well built 50" fish. I guess I also need a tape that starts at the 5" mark. lol. Edited by ande 10/12/2017 4:41 PM

Posts: 239 Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | I think I'll stop measuring my fish. I like to get a photo of a muskie over 45", so I can recall the moment. From now on its mid 40' or pushing 50 or 37-38. I quit netting muskies a couple of years ago under 40 if possible. Seems a lot easier on the fish and less poop in my boat. Quit talking about muskies I caught several years ago, except to a few close friends. My grand sons fish I talk a lot about. Mudpuppy
