This thread cracks me up.

"I don't like sucker fishing, so it is stupid". (paraphrased, of course)

I've read that rhetoric many times before in the form of "I don't like trolling, so no one else should either".

Too easy to catch fish with either method.

Laughable posts from those that have mastered neither.

Not to crack up Mr. Sloan anymore, but I just don't like killing/"hurting" something to catch a fish. I very seldom use minnows, but can get away with the things without eye balls (i.e. leeches & nightcrawlers). The last time I sucker fished I bought 3 (12" class-Minnesota) suckers. I used the rubber band thingey through its nostrils and even dabbed some Anbensol on the bait needle prior to rigging. I ended up using the same one for two days, and did release "Rudolph" ( I probably named them all) as illegal as it is into the lake, and returned the other two to the bait shop (no refund requested). I'm not a member or supporter of P.E.T.A., but I'm guessing that at this point in my life the intentional taking out any of God's critters might mean less points deducted from my board. Fishing with suckers is a great way to put a BIG MUSKIE in the boat/from shore in the late fall. The quick strike rigs are about as "harmless" to a muskie as a Mepps #5 used in June (if done properly). I have absolutely no qualms against anyone fishing with suckers for muskies, because I enjoy looking at the pics of the huge fish they are holding with their frost bite paws. I would give my left gazoonga (even though the right one didn't develop properly) to have the memory of catching/being present during the capture of a BIG Vilas/Onieda County Lake, WI shore caught fish. So what if it was kept/dead due to gut hooking..... "We would of made the scoot to the rod sooner if we heard the clicking that was being drowned out by the clanky sound of beans being stirred over the toasty campfire and Carl yelling that the leak he just took froze instantly!". Those days are hopefully gone, but some may still need a bit of edjamacating. Do what it takes to get your big fish, enjoy every "free" minute you have, and try your best so someone else can possibly have the same thrill with the same fish. Remember that no one really cares where you placed in the "KEPT" category of the V.C.M.M. or the O.C.M.H. (is that still in existence?). Get a replica of something that you think you caught like everyone else is doing....it's the new "Fun for the Whole Family" trend.

Sucker fishing is no sure thing that you'll catch a muskie. Its fun and just another tool to use in the pursuit of the muskie. If we release them all what difference should it make how they are caught? Every angler see the same sort in a different light. That does not make either one wrong. I fish suckers in the fall behind my little 14 ft boat> I row all day slowly working the bars or weed edges. Thats not being lazy or taking the simple way. My hat is off to those that they say they fish suckers and enjoy it.

Didn't mean to sound like I'm ripping people who don't like using suckers.

I personally don't like using them, but with the advancments in rigs and lines, it is a safe and effective method.

I've never even had a bite on one, but know some old-timers that have really turned it into an art, rowing the deep breaks, pause and go around cribs, etc. Still some groups in N.WI using single hooks from shore, that bugs me.

If I'm rowing in the fall I'd just as soon have a Grandma and Slammer deep diver behind the boat.

i've started offering stores where i see single hook rigs the following deal: i'll buy every single hook rig off their shelves if they promise me to buy quick strike rigs to replace them. i then give some suggestions on what companies carry quick strike rigs for them to get. i've had a few take me up on the offer already, and at an average of $1.50/rig, it hasn't even cost me very much.
my local sporting goods store (DW in Portage) is now selling my home-made quick strike rigs instead of the single hook rigs they had been selling.

Personally, I dont very much like casting all day till every muscle in my body hurts..I also dont like sitting on my butt wasting gas and repeatedly retrieving weed bombed boards all day. I most ceartainly dont enjoy paying 7 bucks for a sucker that might just get hit by a 30" pike or rigging a sucker in 30 degree weather while it shakes the rig into my hand, but I sure like catching muskies..Its actually my favorite thing to do..By any (legal) means neccasary..Isnt that what its about?

It's about hanging out with great friends, in god's country, with a cold beer and a fishin' pole. Catching fish is a bonus!

Hmmm, I think both motor trolling and sucker fishing are easy ways to catch musky and any idiot can do it.

You can sit on a pier along a deep dropoff, throw out three suckers and not do a thing except reel it in after it swallows your bait. That's really hard. Of course you can sit on the shore with a bunch of guys hitting the bottle and a fire going and set out several rods that can only be tended by boat and do it the hard way too. Yeah right, that is the tough way.
Better yet, as one mentioned troll several suckers behind the boat on planers and cover like 30 yard swaths as you go across the lake. Better yet, troll suckers illegally in waters where it isn't allowed, and REALLY get a jump on the other guys, then claim confusion if the law nabs you.

there's many people who think "any idiot can do it" about fishing Double Cowgirls too.
perhaps we should make it unethical to use them?

that's what I thought too - sucker fishin is for people that don't fish for muskes...

Live bait? Where's the challenge in that? Hang a piece of meat over the side and wait? I did that bluegill fishing up until about 30+ years ago when I graduated to casting and using lures. It just ain't right, man.

Then I tried it. Still casting of course, because in WI you can have two lines out. I learned a couple things:

1. When that clicker goes off, man... Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up
2. Watching a big old muskie follow that sucker around, 10 minutes or more, just looking? Maybe live bait's not so easy.
3. Even when you do get one to eat the sucker it's no guarantee you'll catch that fish.

So I don't know, Tommy. Maybe to you sucker fishing "blows". That's what I used to want to think because I wanted to be all high and mighty mr conservationist protect the muskie with our swords.

But today? Well its funny, but some of the most respected guides and anglers in musky fishing use live bait. And I've seen more muskies hooked badly on artificial lures than I have on live bait. More importantly than that, I don't care if it "blows", it's just plain FUN. It's fishing, its fun, and that's the whole point. Driving hooks through their faces with a lure or driving hooks through their faces with a sucker, we let 'em go either way. Lots of times sucker fishing you just wind up feeding them, which is a whole lot more than they get just eating a chunk of wood.

If I had to choose, I'd cast. Better hookups that way, easier to catch them, and more fun than just sitting there. But if I can hang a sucker over the side of the boat and catch one that way, I'm gonna do it.

What's good about it? Sorno said enough: ZZZZzzzzztt!
What's bad about it? Watching a muskie follow the sucker, knowing its there and not being able to do anything except wait. Setting the hook and coming up empty. Knowing that you set the hook, came up empty, and that fish is now done for the day, full, and you paid for its dinner.

Well said. Kingfisher

Love DCG comment. Some how bellying up to your favorite reef or weedbed and slinging a reel straight in do nothing bait is more noble than deftly working a sucker along a deep break or weed edge, yeah sure it is. LOL

ok for you doubters! If any of you want to go out with me fishing skies with suckers for a day this fall let me know> I'll show you how much fun it is and how the fish are hooked when caught. Many of you bad mouth it and to be honest some of you never tried it. Just give me another 10 days for my foot to heal and I'll be out often.
