While I run 3 bank Dual pro's in my boats, my portable battery charger for my jon boat/vehicle/atv has a broken power cord right at the unit wall. It is an old Exide Nautilus Gold charger, that while charged flawlessly for the past 15 years, was never a fully 'automatic' charger in that I had to really watch it and turn it off a few hours later or it would over-charge.
I see there is just a ton of options, Schumacher being one that I am looking at, though they have several models as well. I'd like something waterproof, though I don't see many of them available.
What do you suggest to replace my old compact/portable charger in terms of an automatic model that I can forget about for a day or two and not have issues. Feel free to drop a link or model number here.

Location: The desert | I had some issues with the Schumacher auto chargers, specifically with AGM/gel batteries. They automatic feature never seemed to kick in and would fry batteries like it was their job.
I picked up a Schumacher 8/2 amp charger. It drops to a maintain mode after so many hours. But I try to remember to pull it after a few hours. It's decent. |

Location: Kingston, Ontario | Recently got a CATERPILLAR charger. It has some great features. Alternator check, battery "recovery", auto-charging and voltage checker. The charger provides a big boost charge then slowly charges at lower Amps for several hours. The only issue with it compared to other chargers it is will not turn back on to maintain the battery if you are away from it for a long time. But that would have to be several weeks or even months to be a factor. |

| I picked up one at Menards that has an AGM setting that has been good for me so far. Don't remember the brand off hand though. Good call on replacing your Nautilus charger with the cords frayed..... I plugged mine in this spring and within 30 seconds the cables to the batteries and unit were on fire..... Really glad I lingered in the garage instead of just plugging in and heading out the door..... |
