I have an older Maxxum trolling motor and was out fishing today and it was pretty windy. The issue is when bigger waves would hit the boat the trolling motor would turn and not hold the course that I was on. It would almost turn 180 degrees. The only way I could keep it straight was to keep my foot on the pedal. My previous boat had a power drive and this would not happen.

Is this normal for a cable drive TM? Is there a way to fix/minimize this?

Thanks or the input!

Mike

Tighten tension screw on front of foot pedal.

You can tighten the tension adjustment and it will help some, but if it's really windy you'll still need to pull a Captain Morgan and keep your foot on the pedal all the time. That's one thing I don't miss about the Maxxum.

Do search for "Troll Perfect trolling motor adjustment system".

there are times when a cable is the best option fishing rivers, stumps … going into cover and getting out fast or running in extreme shallow water by pulling the rope and using four wheel drive and then there are times when having an auto is great. consider getting 2 trolling motors and switching them out based on conditions with the quick release mount. i went that route and love it! mine are both motor guides, not sure if you can do that effectively with the mini-kota products or not.
