| Hey guys,
Looking to upgrade my 1987 Mariner 40hp outboard and I have been looking at an '03 50hp Yamaha and a 99' 50hp Mercury. Are the bolt patterns the same for all outboards, or at least the same for each above?
I have asked the dealers if they are the same as Mariner's, but they dont seem to know for sure.
Thanks,

| I believe they standardized the bolt patterns for all makes of outboards, with that said 40 and 50hp are in a grey area in my mind because some could be clamp on motors and might not fall into that.
If you were talking going from 90hp to 150hp those should be the same pattern. So I want to say yes same pattern but I have no experience to back up that. All the sites I searched seemed to say the cut off for the same pattern is at 40hp being the smallest motor with the same pattern as bigger motors and any motor under 40hp has a smaller pattern.

Location: Eastern Ontario | On a former boat I went from an 50 hp merc I think 86 to an 03 Suzuki 60 4 stroke and the transom had to be dowled and redrilled. So I'm guessing Merc and Mariner and possibly Yamaha was different than OMC and Suzuki for some years. |

| Discounting clamp ons they did standardize the bolt patterns in the early 80s. Keep in mind the pattern is the same but the bolt size may be different depending if it was a American or Japanese motor. Ie standard and metric bolt sizes. |
