Looking for some tips on mounting a lss transducer on a ranger 620 | |||

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | I would say, don't stress too badly and follow the dirctions because they're direct and as they should be, but last time I said that about a transducer I was blasted and told I didn't know what I was talking about. But I've got a 620 hull and I mounted one as per directions and following "accepted" ducer mounting rules and it works great. Keep it close to your conventional sonar if you want to overlap LSS on your 2D sonar, keep it out of the "plane" of your motor or your setback cavity. Conventional sonar is a cone that shoots down, and LSS is like a slice that shoot out to the sides and down. So if your motor is in the way, it'll block that side. Mine is on the RH side, up on the step, hanging off the back of the boat to get it out of the setback angles. Hold it up on the boat, eyeball to the left and right and make sure the shot is unobscured, and it's level. You're mounting it on a glass boat, so don't get too worried about interference or mounting it on a block of Starboard. Measure/mark twice, drill once! There is also an aftermarket mount you can buy that mounts it straight to the underside of the step. PM me if you want pics.

Posts: 379 Location: Thief River Falls MN | Mounted mine on the stepped part of the Hull. I took a piece of plastic transducer mounting plate and screwed it with 2 screws to the step. Covered screws with 3M 4200 and a bead around the board. Attached LSS2 to board instead of step. Ranger recommended the step location. Make sure you plan your screw holes! | ||

Depends on what year 620 you have and what other items you have in the rear of the boat. My 05 620 has a step that wouldnt me allow a flush mount as the slope out to the sides would have reflected the side signal. I have a jack plate and considered mounting it off that. Issue was that it would have sit 4-5" further away from my transom and would have been useless on the port side due to my kicker. I really wanted to use the ss when trolling so kicker is down and would have reflected signal. Would have worked fine if just using the main engine n kicker was trimmed up. Ended up mounting on the transom at lowest point just below my jackplate. I get some interference from kicker but a little trim up helps. I can get very good imaging up to about 5-6 mph this way. I've talked to some guys who say when correctly mounted you can get side imaging at 20mph plus but Im skeptical of that. | |||

Location: 31 | I was super nervous about the placement of my LSS 1 and 2D transducer on my 08 621, so I know what you are going threw. I thought about the jack plate install too, but went with the LSS 1 on the opposite side away from the kicker and it's worked out well. I have another 2D threw hull transducer because the 2D in the picture doesn't work all the time on plane… it's always nice to have a backup though. I agree with the 20 mile an hour assessment with the structure scan (I'm in the same 5 mph range), and also have a little interference on the port side from the kicker when it's running… I think that's unavoidable. The underwater light was not worth the time and effort BTW. I think these other posts are spot on and hope this helps, good luck with it.
