On my brand new 6501 c3 reel, I am having a problem with the drag setting. With the drag cranked as tight as it can go, it still seems like it is to loose for musky fishin. Bein new to musky fishin I don't know what your drag should be set at with 80 pound braid, but when throwing a phantom jerk bait, I can feel line being pulled out on the jerks. Is there something that can be done or did I just buy a bad reel? Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Make sure it's not actually the line slipping on the spool. The spool should have a piece of electical tape or similar so the knot (uni knot) does not slip when it's attached to the spool. I had a reel spooled at Rollie and Helens and they taped it and added thinner mono to attach to the spool and then tied the braided line on to the mono.

As mm3 said it sounds like the line is slipping (actually turning on the spool). If you spooled it yourself you'll know if you did not either tape the line or use monofilament backing. If a store or somebody else did it for you they should know better. Any of the superbraid lines will do this. The line has no stretch and is pretty slick so it can easily just keep turning on the spool if not secured correctly. Here's a way to check without taking the line all the way off. Use a Sharpie marker to mark a point on the edge of the spool itself and make another mark on the line right next to it. Give the line a pull and if those two marks separate that means the line is not holding. Strip it off, spool on about 10 yards or so of 14-20 lb. mono line and then tie your braid to that backing. I use back to back uni knots but anything reasonably secure will work. Then respool with your braid and your problem should be solved.

Most likely the problem is the line slipping on the spool but if not, the next most likely problem is oil or grease on the drag washers which is also an easy fix on an abu. Just take off the side plate and wipe down each washer one by one.
