Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I just spent most of a week fishing with a friend who owns 2 Humminbird units from a few years ago. While I was extremely impressed with the clarity of the sonar, and the lack of clutter/interference when running two units side by side, what I really liked, was his ability to shade contours on the Lakemaster map. We were able to choose the zone/s that were producing and color shade those particular contours/depths, which helped these areas 'pop' on the map at a glance once a pattern developed, and assisted in the fish boated dept. Saw this once on the Lindner program, and now in person, and see its' usefullness. /being able to shade, for example, everything from 9-11' let us quickly see where there was a wide band of 10' etc. without studying the map to do so. Very nice when on the go. I know my lcx 111 does not, but I want to assume my HDS 7 has the feature. I was just wondering how to perform this custom contour shading with these units.

I could be wrong but believe that is one of the features exclusive to the HB unit with the 2010 Lakemaster chip. It is called depth range highlight. The other two features are Water Level Offset (enables you to recalibrate the contour lines according to the ACTUAL current depth of a lake) and Shallow Water Highlight.

Posts: 574 | On the HDS units you can set the "Saftey Depth" easy enough to find playing around in the menu. The (safty depth) can be set to 6, 18, and 30ft? (Numbers might be slightly off but its close?) and then everthing that depth and shallower is blue, and deeper stuff shows up white.. I use it in summer on 6ft, so just the shallow stuff sticks out.. Makes humps, submerged points etc.. easier to locate quickly. Fall it goes to the 18. Only 3 settings, would be nice if you could set whatever depth you like, but the 6 and the 18 do what I need.. I think this is basicly what your refering to.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Yes, I am aware of the safety zones, but it isn't what I was looking for. Looking to select 1-2' bands to highlight. You are right though, the 6' safety zone does come in handy for shallow hump/flat work, but being able to select for certain bands is sure nice and was amazing how areas 'popped' out at me on the map, areas I might not have normally looked at. Thanks much for the responses. Makes my decision easier, when I have to eventually replace my big unit(hopefully won't be soon, and by then Lowrance might offer the feature...hehe). The one thing I don't like about the HB(at least the model I was using) was the need to be going at least .6 MPH in order for the arrow to appear and update/show which way the rig is going. Not sure if the newer units are also like this, but my Lowrance is superior in that dept. Edited by Reef Hawg 10/24/2010 7:31 PM

I have a HB with the Lakemaster chip and you are correct about the features you listed. I was on LSC a few weeks ago and was able to highlight the depth of water I had heard the fish were in. It does help narrow down a big body of water if you know what depth you want to fish.
