I don't have a light on when I'm casting. I have a hiker's headlamp I wear but don't turn it on until I need to. I like my eyes to adjust to the dark rather then use a light at all times. No light makes for a more bug free evening. When I need a light to deal with a fish I have a couple options.

For $5.00 at Boaters World I got a florescent work light stick which plugs into my 12v in my dash. It's on a 12ft cord which is plenty long. Most often we just leave it on the dash and let it shine through the windshield. Its great for backlighting pictures in the dark so your camera has enough light to focus properly.

My bass boat has 4 Stan Sloan black light's which I can plug in on the gunwalls. I only use one which I have installed a florescent bulb in to replace one of the black light bulbs. I leave it plugged in and only turn it on when I need it. It will light up an area 15ft square in the water making it bright as 10am to work on the fish in the water.

If you are going to fish in the dark, find something you like to help you keep from banging your leader into your rod tip. I like to put a small piece of mono on the line about 12" up from the leader.

Tyr to maintain "dark out" mode as much as possible...it can take up to 20 minutes to regain your night vision, which equals valuable time lost; a direct shot of hi beam will have you seeing 'stars" once things go dim again. Do as Luke said + use that black light...maintain light discipline + allow your hearing to aid you at night...become 1 w/ the w/ the opposite of day![:sun:]

DITTO on the black light thing,+ it makes my Jimmy Hendrix poster really stand out.My friend said he knew a guy that had amber fog lights mounted on his gunwales, and it made the weeds highly visable.I'm saving up for a pair of those night vision goggles............................IF MUSKIES COULD DRIVE,WOULD THEY FOLLOW US HOME?

I use a "hands free" flashlight that I picked up at a Menards this summer. They look like safety glasses with two light bulbs on the birdge of the frame. The batteries (4 AAA) go in the arms of the glasses. They are fairly light weight, and IMO perfect for night fishing.. the light goes directly where your head is facing.. and at $5.00 even if they fell in the drink it's not a big loss!
