Posts: 225 Location: Nordeast Minneapolis | Hey guys... I've got a Minn kota autopilot bowmount that I'm having some issues with. First time I took tue boat out this year, it was having steering problems, so I brought it in to fishlectronics. They diagnosed the problem as the pedal, so I replaced that. Now, about half the time, I have a whole new problem. When I try to turn right, it sometimes continues to spin clockwise, and will only stop when I unplug the motor! Other notes... the front depth finder is powered through the plug for the trolling motor, and when the trolling motor isn't working, the finder won't work, either. I have also brought the whole rig back to fishlectronics, and they replaced the fuse and some wiring, but the same issue remains. And the problems have all started since I had my aux batteries replaced. Not sure if that means anything. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Couple questions, I have had autopilots for many years and have a bunch of different problems with them. What model do you have? 55#, 65#, etc? When the motor starts turning and will not stop, do you have the autopilot on? I had a 55# autopilot motor that would get a mind of its own on occasion. Some of the time I believe it was caused by rough water. The compass in the head of the motor is fluid filled and I believe (not 100% sure) that somehow the constant up and down of the motor was causing it fits. I had better luck when I lowered the motor all the way down. My motor issues were later resolved by a new control board (installed under warranty). The board was actually from a 65#, which is a 24 volt motor. I am told that the larger models have a "memory" built into them so if it loses track of where its at, it will return to its last known heading. I have a 65# motor on my new boat and have never had the issue like I did with my 55#. So, either they resolved it, or it may be something to do with the smaller motors.

Location: The Yahara Chain | It sounds like the compass on your auto pilot needs to be replaced. I'd take it to an authorized Minnkota repair shop.

Posts: 225 Location: Nordeast Minneapolis | It does the crazy spinning thing regardless of whether or not I have the autopilot on, unfortunately. Fishlectronics is an authorized shop, and they haven't been able to find anything obviously wrong with the motor at this point. Of course, that doesn't mean there ISN'T something wrong with it... but the depth finder not working has be thrown for a loop. When the depth finder works, the trolling motor works. But when the trolling motor goes crazy, the depth finder won't work, either...

Posts: 42 | I fixed some wacky problems on my Auto-pilot 55 by changing out the main electronic board. If I'm not mistaken it was not expensive. Maybe $75.00 from Cabelas. Easy do it yourself job. Edited by BassMiesterNJ 8/17/2010 7:55 PM
