You always hear about fish being caught on topwater right before or right after ice out. Does anyone do good on topwater with some consistency when the water is 45-55 degrees? I want to give it a try since you know they hit BIG baits this early, why not a topwater. Thanks for the input in advance!

Has worked for me in first out conditions in several states. Mid March in IN, IL, or KY or season open in WI or MN

The only time they will not work is if they are bouncing off of the ice. It's mainly a confidence thing. Theories abound as to when it is too cold to go on top. Don't believe them, leave that option open regardless of what water temps are.

I fished Pewauke for the first time in late Oct.2005, pulled up to a boat with a father and son throwing jerks on the weed line . Water temps,49-50*

After asking them about the lake and lure choice, I asked them if top water would work and they said "no way, its to cold " ..... so I strapped on a pacemaker and headed for the opposite shore and about an hr. later popped a nice fat 44" muskie in about 2ft of sloppy water.

Top water flat out works anytime.
