Subject: Twin Cities Trailer Light Help !!!

Hey Guys:

I have had an ongoing problem for 2 years now and finally have decided to get it fixed. My trailer lights keep making my fuse blow in my truck. Also, if the trailer is used on other trucks, it blows their fuse too. I have checked the trailer high and low for any knicks, etc. in the wiring and can't find anything.

I am going to have to take it into the shop and either have it looked at. I live in WBL, so my first instinct is to go to Nelson Marine in WBL or to Hallburg Marine in Forest Lake.

Thoughts?

The only thing that I can think of that will do that is a short, a nick may be almost impossible to find sometimes. You might have to start from scratch with the wiring.

Definately a short somewhere. Does it always happen, or is it intermittant? Had a friend who took out a blown bulb on one of the side markers, and didn't replace it. The contacts touched, and he had his whole harness out when I came over to help. Found it right away, and spent the next hour fishing the harness back through the rails.

If it's intermittant, it will be hard to find. It's possible it has a wear point, and you might find it by looking closely at the harness. You'd have to remove it to look all of it. Look for rust stains on the insulation, or green corrosion from exposed copper wire. Any break in the insulation could be the culprit. You could try to pull the harness one way or the other to see if you can move it away from the wear point. Might be cheaper and less time consuming to buy a whole new harness, and reroute it. Use a fish tape to route it through the frame rails. You could also tie some string to the ends of the harness your taking out to inspect, and use the string to route the repaired, new harness. Good luck.

give it one more look over!!! try taking out all the bulbs and see if it still blows..if not reinstall bulbs one at a time till fuse blows...may be a bad bulb or socket!!

I had a similar problem last year and took it to my dad. The problem turned out to be that there was a ground, but it wasn't a good one. We had to drill a hole and scrape the paint off to get a good ground. This also was blowing my fuses in the truck and the first time it happened I blew a headlight. Maybe was coincidence, but that was not fun driving in the middle of nowhere without dash lights, and one headlight. could be the same issue??
