So far I think I have got the paint and clear coat down. I am just having trouble with the screw eye. The ones that I have have very short threads and won't stay in the wood. Please help.

get longer screw eyes.

Stamina has them up to 2"

And put 2-ton epoxy on them before you thread them in.

Put the epoxy in the predrilled pilot hole. If you put it on the screw eye, most of it collects at the front of the hole.
