The old adage "if it was easy, everyone would do it" came to mind this morning as the PMTT kicked off their tournament trail season at Cave Run Lake in Kentucky earlier this morning. With recent fishing reports speaking of muskie action being slow, a rainy chilly morning greeted the 130 boats entered into this first event of the year.
Weather temps were hovering in the low 40s with rain fluctuating between a fine mist, into a hard downpour, and the wind wasn't helping to make the conditions any better on the contestants with strong gusts up to 16 miles per hour. The days forecast calls for slowly clearing skies, intermittant showers lasting possibly into the late afternoon. Tomorrow is calling for clearing with highs in the low 60s.
It remains to be seen how these condtions affect local pros such as Crash Mullins and Tony Grant, as well as those not so familiar with the lake who may have relatively no experience dealing with the quick changes this type of rain can bring to a southern resevoir such as "The Cave". With anglers coming from a combined 18 different states, many tournament entrants might not be familiar in dealing with rising water levels, decreasing visibility, and enhanced current flow, which might give the locals a marked advantage over their competition. But, with these cool temps, the days' results may be determined by a single fish, or a few inches.
But, this is tournament muskie fishing, and with close to $20,000 on the line for first place, this weekends PMTT anglers are sure to be doing their best to fish through whatever weather they are faced with this weekend. Check back for more reports as they come in.

With 260 experienced muskie hunters hitting the water on one of the best lakes in the southern end of the muskie's range, it should really be of no surpise that a good number, with some quality fish included, were boated today. The rainy weather did clear, bringing on sunny skies, and the fish did show themselves to at least a portion of the anglers on the water. Though there were a large number of anglers who went the day without even seeing a fish, a few teams not only boated legals, but in a number of cases double or even tripled today. Some large fish were caught, many fish were following baits, and a large number of largemouth bass were eating muskie baits.
Preliminary numbers (very unofficial at this point) show that over 11 boats will be registering fish, with the largest we have heard of being in the 46-47" range. We can confirm at least two fish caught at 43.5", but as stated before, all these numbers are unofficial, at best.
The word thus far on patterns are of fish not being in their classic shallow patterns, but more a step off the break. Muddy waters were the norm, with a number of anglers heading away from the dam in search of clearer waters.
More info, and official day one numbers to come later.
